There’s been a lot going on in the graphics card market lately. This is mainly due to Nvidia. Team Green recently released two new accelerators – the RTX 4070 Super (click here to test the RTX 4070 Super) and the RTX 4070 Ti Super (we have linked the test for you further down in the text).
And that’s not all. The RTX 4080 Super will be released this week. What all new models have in common is that they either come onto the market at the RRP of the respective non-Super version or, as in the case of the RTX 4080 Super, are even significantly cheaper.

Falling prices at AMD
Since AMD is currently not sending any new graphics cards onto the field apart from the Radeon RX 7600 XT (click here to test the RX 7600 XT), the only thing left to counter Nvidia’s super portfolio is the fight over price. This becomes very clear in two examples:
For example, the ASRock Radeon RX 7900 XT Phantom Gaming OC is currently available from 759 dollars. It was last traded for over 800 dollars:

For 759 dollars you get a fully-fledged 4K graphics card that, according to the GameStar test, cracks the 60 FPS mark in many games even at the highest settings without having to use FSR. With the current FSR 3 you can significantly increase the performance in supported games.
The Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 7800 XT is now available from 519 dollars. The price has gradually fallen in recent months, although not from an extremely high level:

Nevertheless, you get a powerful graphics card for gaming, especially in WQHD resolution.
We’re excited to see how prices for the RX 7900 XTX develop once the RTX 4080 Super is on the market. The release is on January 31st and could drive down the price of the Radeon flagship, just as the RTX 4070 Super and RTX 4070 Ti Super did with the RX 7900 XT and RX 7800 XT.
Falling prices at Nvidia
It’s not just AMD where prices are falling thanks to the new Nvidia cards. Something is also happening at Nvidia itself.
For example, the Gainward Geforce RTX 4070 Ti Panther is currently available from 773 dollars. Most recently, well over 800 dollars were raised for this:

The RTX 4070 Ti boasts good 4K performance in the GameStar test, but is primarily intended for gaming in WQHD. The RTX 4070 Ti Super delivers a whopping eleven percent more performance, but costs 889 dollars.
Meanwhile, many games benefit from the performance boost DLSS (or DLSS 3) and frame generation for even more frames per second.
The situation is similar with the MSI Geforce RTX 4070 Ventus 2X E 12G OC out of. For a long time you had to shell out around 600 dollars for it. The card is now available from 572 dollars:

Is now the best time in a long time to buy a new graphics card?
Yes, indeed, it is. At least when it comes to the RX 7900 XT, RX 7800 XT, RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070. The falling prices at both Nvidia and AMD speak for themselves. Anyone who needs a new graphics card can now purchase one of these models with a clear conscience.
The situation is somewhat different for some models that are not directly affected by the new super variants from Nvidia, for example because they are being replaced by them or are in direct competition. The RTX 4060, for example like the MSI Geforce RTX 4060 Ventus 2X Black 8G OC here, is relatively stable in price:

The same applies to the Radeon RX 7700 XT and the Geforce RTX 4090. Many custom designs of the Nvidia flagship have been stable at a high level of around 1,900 dollars for months. Compared to the middle of last year, they have even become more expensive again.
The RTX 4060 Ti as well as the RX 7600 are falling in price, although they are not in direct competition with the new super models from Nvidia. Here too it can be said that it is a good time to buy.
Overall, we can say that many graphics cards from the current generation are currently available at comparatively good prices.
A big But

A big But
but it still exists. Because at the end of this year or the beginning of next year we are already expecting the new graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD – and possibly also Intel.
If you are still well equipped and can wait a year, you should probably do that. Potentially more performance can be expected at a price that may be similar to that of current models.

The fact that new graphics cards do not automatically cause prices for older cards to fall is demonstrated by the Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080 (see the image above), for example.
The Palit Geforce RTX 3080 GamingPro was already available before the launch of the RTX 4080 in November 2022 for around 850 dollars. And it was only long after its market launch, in May 2023, that the price of the 3080 fell noticeably – to just over 800 dollars. Today they are available from around 720 dollars.
