Netflix is giving its subscribers a fresh look at its new release agenda for 2024 with the remake of a cult film. And it’s far from everyone’s cup of tea…
Netflix has a lot in store and will be showing it all year long. And the platform has already launched with the critically and audience-acclaimed film “The Snow Circle.” Yes, for once the reviews were extremely positive and the talent of Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) was not deleted by the SVOD service. A good introduction, but other major programs such as the Avatar: The Last Airbender series or the remake of a major work are still pending.
Netflix offers its version of cult films
Netflix’s new releases in 2024 promise to be very numerous and one of them has just received a release date… but also a first teaser trailer. Does The Wages of Fear mean something to you? It is a cult film by Henri-Georges Clouzot in which volunteers are tasked with driving trucks armored with nitroglycerin. And all of this over a long distance with a simply hellish course. The feature film based on the novel by Georges Arnaud starring Yves Montand was released in 1953 and you probably missed it.
On the other hand, you probably know “The Sorcerer” by William Friedkin (“The Exorcist”). It is also an adaptation of the work of Georges Arnaud, which has left a mark on all viewers and actors. The filming was extremely rough, but the image result is correct. More than 40 years later, Netflix is taking over this work and rele asing a remake of The Wages of Fear.
To drive this truck, which is always ready to jump, we have a team consisting of Franck Gastambide, Alban Lenoir, Ana Girardot and the rapper Sofiane Zermani aka Fianso. “To prevent a terrible explosion, a secret team has 24 hours to drive two trucks loaded with nitroglycerin through a dangerous desert.”. It will be available exclusively on Netflix on March 29, 2024.
The remake of Wages of Fear divides internet users
After the Road House remake, which will be available on Prime Video, Netflix is resorting to great classics and, as expected, they don’t necessarily please. There is only a short teaser, but the fears are already there. The comparison with the films by Clouzot and Friedkin does not benefit the remake, and the casting in particular is controversial.
“We’ll see what happens.” But given the casting, I’m a little scared. And then Clouzot’s version is so good”; “Pff… another remake. Compassionate »; “Who is the guy who said yes when we said Gastambide and Clouzot in the same sentence? »; “The remake of Clouzot’s untouchable film. But why ?! »; “Fortunately, William Friedkin died before he saw this…”; “No just no! It’ll be a horrible, cliched version.; “After Sans Répit, Gastambide is the second remake for Netflix. It’s creatively sad.” we can read about it in the various networks.
Salty comments, but maybe true? Answer in a few weeks. What is certain is that it obviously fails to recreate the atmosphere of Friedkin’s film, for example, and that we seem to be moving very far away from the two feature films and preferring something very action-oriented.
