In the past few days, Blizzard has been giving hints of a new hero for Overwatch. Anyone who knows a little bit about the background story and has carefully followed the videos and trailers will have already recognized that it is echo.
The Omnic, which reminds us a little of Cortana from Halo, had short appearances in McCree's cinematic video »Reunion« and in the story trailer of Overwatch 2. Even back then, the fans had suspected that Echo would eventually become a hero. Now it has finally happened.

Overwatch 2 release later this year?
Who's Echo?
Thanks to the Origin video, we already know a lot about the new hero and its creator. Echo is an ominc, so a robot with free will and the improved skills of people. It was created by Dr. Mina Liao, who was instrumental in creating the omnics and is the mysterious seventh founding member of Overwatch.
The story video tells us that Dr. Mina Liao worked on Echo during her time at Overwatch and finally finished it. Echo represents Liao's life's work and represents the omnics that Liao wanted to create before the Ominic catastrophe.
Is the new heroine dead?
There are indications in the video that Dr. Liao was killed in her laboratory. This theory has not been confirmed. However, since she has not yet appeared alongside the other founding members, it is very likely in fan circles that she is either dead or at least still missing.
Echo reflects the characteristics and goals of her builder's life. The many parallels between creature and creator may indicate that Mina Liao has transferred parts of her consciousness to Echo.

Nothing specific is yet known about Echo's role and capabilities. In Overwatch 2's story trailer, we see them flying over a group of Omnic and firing small energy missiles, which may be comparable to Zarya's particle cannon shots and cause area damage. It will be exciting whether she can fly permanently (which will be exciting when balancing) or whether she can only temporarily stay in the air like Phara and Mercy. Her design, her behavior towards McCree in his Cinematic and her motivation to do something good for the world could indicate a support role. In the Overwatch 2 trailer, however, it clearly takes on a damage role. From the chronology alone, it would be time for a new damage dealer again. What do you think?
