Duncan Jones is back! The director of films like Warcraft, Moon and Source Code has already shot his latest sci-fi action film. The trick: Rogue Trooper was animated entirely in Unreal Engine 5, which is of course used in games like Fortnite, The Witcher 4 or Stalker 2.

Brutal sci-fi war in the distant future

That’s what it’s about: Rogue Trooper is an adaptation of the comics of the same name by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons, which debuted in 1981 in the 2000 AD collection. The story takes place in the distant future on the planet Nu-Earth, where two warring factions are shooting each other to pieces.

In the middle of the conflict between the so-called Norts and Southers is a genetically enhanced super soldier named 19 again – the result of questionable experiments. It was already known in 2018 that Duncan Jones was working on an adaptation of Rogue Trooper, and now the animated film is almost finished.

An official trailer is still awaited, But there is already a first picture and new information about the cast. While Jones is responsible for directing and writing, Jason and Chris Kingsley (Dredd) and Stuart Fenegan (Moon, Source Code, Warcraft) are on board.

These are, among other things Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk), Haley Atwell (Captain America, Mission: Impossible 7), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) Daryl McCormack (Bad Sisters), Reece Shearsmith (Saltburn), Jemaine Clement (Avatar 2), Matt Berry (What We Do In The Shadows) und Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) involved.

There is currently no specific start date, Rogue Trooper is scheduled to release sometime in 2025. Whether in the cinema or exclusively on streaming services also remains unclear at the moment.

Duncan Jones’ last films were not convincing

Rogue Trooper will be Duncan Jones’ first film since the Netflix flop Mute. The sci-fi film debuted on the streaming service in 2017, but was not well received by critics and fans Metacritic Mute averages 35 to 52 points Rotten Tomatoes to 21 to 47 percent.

Duncan Jones also previously brought the Warcraft film adaptation to cinemas, but it flopped at the box office. Nothing came of the original plans for an entire trilogy.

How much have you liked director Duncan Jones’ previous films so far – especially Warcraft? What are your hopes and expectations for Rogue Trooper, which was animated entirely in Unreal Engine 5? Are you looking forward to the project or would you rather wait for the first trailer? Let us know in the comments!
