Rumors are confirmed after Google Maps driving mode starts working post a notice that it will disappear in February. It’s February, so it may become unavailable at any time.
Google Assistant’s driving mode arrived a few years ago to be considered the alternative to Android Auto for phones, which Google eliminated in 2021. Now this alternative also disappears and with it the dream of have something similar to Android Auto on our phone.
Farewell to Assistant driving mode
Google killed Android Auto for phones and promised us we wouldn’t miss it, because instead we could use Google Assistant driving mode. For a while it looked like that was going to be the case, when they then added a new home screen as a launcher. A year later, Google loaded this screen.
Since then, Google Assistant’s driving mode has survived as a bottom bar that appears on Google Maps during a route, but not for much longer. When we display this bar we see the list of applications with calls, messages and multimedia applications and now a new notification: “this view will disappear in February”.

There is no additional information or link to find out more, although we can do it always presses on the and continue using Assistant Mode as before. Although it is not clear if this will completely kill the Assistant driving mode, the truth is that today it is essentially made up of this view, so if it is eliminated there will be none left much.
At some point this month this driving mode launcher will disappear and in its place we’ll be left with just the microphone icon in Google Maps. Two years after the permanent closure of Android Auto for phones, its legacy becomes the microphone icon within Google Maps.
