After we reported some time ago that Microsoft wants to make some features of Windows 10 optional, there is now new information: How Windows latest reports, Microsoft has confirmed some future optional functions for the Windows 10 20H1 update.
Paint, WordPad & Co. are optional
The update for Windows 10 in version 2004 will allow users to deactivate the following features in the operating system settings:
- Paint
- Notepad
- WordPad
- PowerShell (ISE) – Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment
- Printer management console (used to manage printers, printer drivers and print servers)
- Steps Recorder (a tool from Windows 7 that allows keylogging and screen recordings, among other things)
- Windows fax and scan
Deactivate yes, uninstall no
If you do not want to use these functions and want to save system memory accordingly, you can deactivate the features in the "Optional Features" tab in the system settings of Windows 10.
However, the associated programs cannot be completely uninstalled, but only deactivated.

Windows 10 breaks the billion – but two years later than planned
Microsoft has decided not to uninstall these features because removing individual operating system functions could interfere. The option to disable them, however, still reduces the amount of space that Windows 10 takes up on the hard drive.
Incidentally, we will not have to wait too long before we can switch off the functions mentioned: Windows 10 version 2004 should appear in April 2020 – if the corona pandemic does not lead to delays in the delivery of the update.
