Earlier this week, Nintendo released its financial report for the third quarter of fiscal year 2024. They usually come with a Q&A session with investors, and this one is no exception. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked a lot of questions, one of which was the influence of Super Mario Bros. on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo’s business worldwide.
According to Furukawa, “there is a big difference between the regions where the movie (Super Mario Bros.) is shown and the countries and regions where the Nintendo Switch is sold. Among them, in South America, and especially in Mexico, where the film was shown, we carried out promotions that go beyond what we have done in the past in the holiday season. As a result, although hardware sales overall are down, sales in Mexico are up”. Furukawa also said they are taking initiatives to reach more customers in Southeast Asia as the market there expands.
However, the discussion did not end there. When pressed on how Nintendo plans to overcome obstacles in expanding its business in certain regions called “Other,” Furukawa said that “hardware price is one of the issues for business expansion in the ‘Other’ region, and until now we have not were able to find the beginning of expanding our dedicated game console business, we were able to do that through a movie (Super Mario Bros.), which increased the opportunities for people to be exposed to our IP.
