No more delays and half measures. The latest Skull and Bones open beta is now available for all platforms and its launch is just around the corner, specifically on February 16, 2024. It has been a long, tortuous development that sought to ensure that the pirate adventure meets all his fans.
The opinions are very different. Many players are enjoying the beta and are convinced that they will continue playing after launch, but a large number have come face to face with a very bitter reality: it is far from what they expected. And Assassin’s Creed Black Flag veterans aren’t too happy either.
Skull and Bones a la sombra de Assassin’s Creed Black Flag
It’s not a secret that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag It was not received with enthusiasm by the more traditional assassins. However, time changed many opinions and it ended up being positioned as one of the best installments of the franchise. So much so that we have been hearing requests and rumors about a remake for years. Ubisoft did not repeat the ship formula again after Rogue.
In 2017, Ubisoft’s response to piracy requests was announced: Skull and Bones, a video game that creates an adventure (as a service) around the naval battles of Black Flag. The idea is more than encouraging and for years we have dreamed of hearing the thundering cannons of Kenway and seeing our boat ride big waves in this installment.
Now that he is among us, what do the veterans of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag after trying the Open Beta? The middle GameStar has collected some statements and we have gone around Reddit to collect some more.
“All I wanted was a new and better Black Flag,” Comment on SpaceGoonie on Reddit. “I miss having to position the boat correctly. Here you just shoot in 360 degrees,” adds timtheringityding. Others remember one of the best aspects of the Jackdaw: the power of its cannons. The sound of firing them was thunderous and you could feel the explosions.
Anyone who liked the mechanics of the AC4 ship liked the power and intensity of the cannons. […] The guns don’t feel like cannons, they feel like powerless guns. Maybe this will change later in the game, but I doubt it.
Another section that has puzzled many fans is the impossibility of walking around the ship (exterior and interior), participating in boardings like Edward Kenway and swimming in the sea. Fans agree that it would be unfair to ask the exact same thing of Skull and Bonesbut they point out that the only thing they know how to do beyond the ship is walk to explore a little and visit the shops in the ports.
“The sea looks good, but everything else seems terrible. […] Oh, and you can’t swim in the sea. In a game where all your time is divided between ships and beaches,” says xannaya in her post. “When I saw that there is no hand-to-hand combat when boarding: I guess I’ll start Sid Meier’s Pirates!” adds AVarietyStreamer in comments.
Others see potential in Skull and Bones: “After really getting into ship customization and doing contracts and quests for a few hours, I’d say the game has a lot of potential. It still needs some love, but the skeleton is already there,” says King_karter69 after testing the Open Beta; and point out the obvious: “It’s Skull and Bones, it’s not Black Flag, it’s not Sea of Thieves,” he says Kimbobbins.
It was never promised it would be Black Flag […] It wasn’t promised to be Sea of Thieves either, if you want to play any of them, do it! Both cost less than $20 and aren’t going anywhere. […] There is too much negativity from people who have nothing constructive to say. […] It’s okay to not like it! But if you want things to change, commenting “shitty game, it’s not Black Flag” doesn’t help. It’s impossible to have a conversation here right now.
Definitely: Skull and Bones has not finished penetrating among many fans of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. The adventure of the assassins set the bar very high and the beta has not been enough for many. As for us, we are playing the open beta and we will bring you the analysis when we have mastered the seas in the final version.
