31 years ago, Super Mario Bros. was released in cinemas. The film featured many different faces that became familiar to Nintendo fans in the decades since. One of them is Mojo Nixon. In the film, he played Toad, one of the characters who will help the Mario brothers thwart the evil plans of President Koop.
Although he is best known to Nintendo fans as Toad in the movie, he is also known as a singer, songwriter and radio host. His career as a musician, combined with a desire for less money than Tom Waits, the production team’s preferred choice for the role of Frog, is how he was eventually cast in the film. It’s not even his only appearance in the film. He played drummer Jerry Lee Lewis in “Great Balls of Fire” and appeared in the film adaptation “Car 54, Where Are You?” from 1994, a television show that originally aired in the 60s.
All that said, we have some tragic news for you today. Mojo Nixon unfortunately passed away at the age of 66. He died of cardiac arrest while sleeping on a country music cruise. He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, a sister, a brother and a granddaughter. We hope Mojo Nixon rests in peace, and we send our condolences to his friends and family.
