Microsoft’s business update was eagerly awaited in the new week, after all it will be about the future of the Xbox division. Will there possibly be no new Xbox consoles in the future? At an internal meeting, Xbox boss Phil Spencer is said to have made a clear statement about this.
All in all, sales of Microsoft’s Xbox consoles are likely to fall short of expectations and are sometimes significantly behind those of the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. This is also why the company should fundamentally rethink the direction of the Xbox division in order to make it more profitable. Since it doesn’t seem to be possible via the hardware rail, a fundamentally realigned multi-platform orientation should ensure the turnaround. Accordingly, a number of previous Xbox exclusive games will also appear on other consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and generate sales.
But what does that mean – should it actually happen that way – in the end for the Xbox hardware? Is there perhaps no longer a successor to the Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft is withdrawing from the hardware business? Even though there had already been leaks about new Xbox hardware plans as a result of the FTC legal dispute? Xbox boss Phil Spencer’s apparently quite clear answer to this question is: No!
Accordingly, there are now reports online that Microsoft has held an internal meeting with employees in view of the numerous speculations of the past week. According to a report by journalist Shannon Liao, Xbox boss Phil Spencer is said to have taken the floor to assure that Microsoft would continue to bring Xbox hardware onto the market in the future. The Xbox consoles would therefore continue to play a role in Microsoft’s multi-device gaming strategy.
The town hall meeting is scheduled to have been held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, following initial reports of the new multiplatform strategy. Spencer then also announced the business update mentioned for the week starting tomorrow, February 12th, which will contain news about the future direction of Xbox. However, a specific date for this update has not yet been communicated.
But one thing seems certain in advance: Xbox fans will continue to get new consoles in the future! This fits with other rumors from last week that the successor to the Xbox Series X/S was in the works, but lagging behind the PlayStation 6 in development. The reason for this is said to be stalled negotiations between Microsoft and AMD about the custom CPU for the upcoming console.
