Dune: Part Two, The upcoming sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 sci-fi epic based on the Frank Herbert novels is out in just two weeks, but somehow the team behind it kept a major star’s involvement completely secret. During the world premiere on February 15th in London The Queen’s Gambit Actress Anya Taylor-Joy appeared on the red carpet to confirm that she is indeed part of the cast of the sequel. This happened after one The eagle-eyed Letterboxd user noticed The Dune: Part Two was listed under Taylor-Joy’s credits on the review aggregation app.

Anya Taylor-Joy is probably Alia Atreides Dune: Part Two
First an attempt at a short version dune Summary. In the distant future, an interstellar society will consist of noble houses whose fiefs span entire planets. The Atreides family, led by Duke Leto (played by Oscar Isaac in Dune: Part One) is ordered to conquer a harsh desert planet called Arrakis as a new fiefdom. Although the planet is virtually inhospitable, it is the only source of the coveted resource “Spice”, a psychedelic drug used in space travel. But as soon as the Atreides family arrives on Arrakis, it becomes clear that they have fallen into a trap set by the rival House Harkonnen, who want to completely wipe them out.

As seen in… Dune: Part One, the Harkonnens’ plan results in Leto’s death and forces Paul and his mother Jessica to flee into the desert. There they come into contact with the Fremen, the native inhabitants of Arrakis who have learned to thrive (not just survive) on the harsh planet. There’s a whole messianic thing that I can’t get into at all, but what’s important here regarding Taylor-Joy is this: Jessica is pregnant and submits to the “spice torment,” a ritual in which she has a deadly Amount takes from spices. Because she is pregnant, the baby is exposed to the spice in the womb and has all the knowledge of a full-grown adult when she is born.
Alia Atreides looks and sounds like a child, but is a full-grown Venerable Mother, the highest attainable rank among the Bene Gesserit (a matriarchal order with religious and political power). With David Lynch dune from 1984, Alia is played by a child actor, but I think (especially when you see what Taylor-Joy wore to the premiereAnd how it compares to what Alia wears in Lynch’s film), that Villeneuve found a way to portray Alia as an adult.
