Ubisoft has just released a brand new, completely free game online on a platform very well known to SVOD enthusiasts. Did Netflix tell you something?
Since 2021, Netflix has been trying to enter the video game industry. Until then, the content was somewhat tentative and lacked scope, but recently the proposal has become more and more serious. On the one hand, we find very popular video game classics such as the first three Grand Theft Auto, Dead Cells or the most recent, multi-award-winning Hades. The streaming giant also offers a variety of mobile games to suit every taste. But above all, various exclusive games from successful licenses. These include Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, Tomb Raider Reloaded, Sonic Prime Dash, etc. Lately, this famous Ubisoft saga is in the spotlight.
A miniature version of a well-known Ubisoft game
In fact, Netflix recently announced this Rainbow Six: SMOL has joined its games catalog. The app is presented as a tactical roguelite in which the player has to form a squad with the various characters from Rainbow Six Siege. Their weapons and abilities can be chosen according to the different missions they need to complete. The gameplay is super satisfying with fully destructible settings. This is not fantasy, as these are tactics that work as you carve your own path by breaking through obstacles or even using doors to throw explosives at enemies.
Rainbow Six, but more accessible and entertaining
As for the story, there is nothing new: the agents of the famous Ubisoft license must thwart the plans of a dangerous and mysterious cult. Additionally, the game’s description mentions “Power Books”, a strange object that seems to clash with the series’ usual universe. There is certainly a connection to this famous cult. In any case, Rainbow Six changes the tone here with a much more cartoony and crazy art direction. Creative director Renaud Forestié explains this in an interview The edge : “We saw an opportunity to bring the franchise to a new audience with a more accessible approach.” It has to be said that up until then Rainbow Six was considered a rather demanding game.
Very good news is the additional information at the end of the trailer: no advertising, no in-game purchases, no additional costs. This is in fact the advantage of playing on Netflix, as it does not require microtransactions as a subscriber: a rare occurrence for a mobile game these days. Rainbow Six: SMOL has been available to subscribers on Android and iOS since February 20th.
