Microsoft celebrated a successful past year for Age of Empires with a live stream today. The strategy franchise now reaches 50 million players. To celebrate the day, there were of course a few announcements – including finally a sign of life from Age of Mythology: Retold.
We have summarized the most exciting information for you in this article.
Age of Mythology: Retold
We finally get to see more of the Age of Mythology remake. After the new edition was announced at the end of 2022, Retold was very quiet for a while. Now Microsoft is back with new information.
Probably the most important information of the evening in advance: Age of Mythology Retold is scheduled to be released for PC and Xbox consoles in 2024. It should also be available in Xbox Game Pass immediately upon release.

Age of Mythology: Retold – Finally a sign of life for the comeback of the strategy classic
In the live presentation we were able to get a first look at the three units from the Greek pantheon: Medusa, Pegasus and Cerberus. Art director Melinda Rose presented the new design and a few revised details.
GameStar can also exclusively reveal two of the playable gods from the remake, which you may already know from the original:
Poseidon – The god of the seas
Gameplay Focus: Cavalry and Economy
If you choose Poseidon as your main god, it will bring a lot of advantages for your cavalry. On the one hand, it gives you a special development “Lord of the Horses”, which increases the visibility of your cavalry, and on the other hand, all cavalry, caravan and mythical units get a speed boost.
Poseidon also brings economic bonuses. For example, markets are cheaper and animals bring more returns, especially in the early game.
Loki – The god of deception and shapeshifting
Gameplay Focus: Mythical units
The main god of the Vikings allows you to see what enemy units see for a short time with the divine spell “Spy”. Together with the development “Eyes in the Forest”, which gives your infantry three times the range of vision, you can make strategic plans early in the game without your enemy noticing.
Additionally, Loki’s human units can summon a random mythical unit during battle. There is also a decent boost to the damage you deal.
Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition – DLC Victors and Vanquished
The next DLC for the Definitive Edition of Age of Empires 2 is coming in just a few weeks. Victors and Vanquished will be released for PC and Xbox consoles on March 14, 2024 and brings a new single player campaign with 19 scenarios. You can go into battle as Ragnar Lothbrok, Oda Nobunaga, Charlemagne and many other generals.
The last major add-on, Return of Rome, was released last year. In our test, strategy expert Reiner Hauser explains for whom the content is really worthwhile and why the DLC concept doesn’t quite work:
Age of Empires 4: Next update and new season
The big add-on for Age of Empires 4 was only released at the end of last year. In our test, The Rise of the Sultans turns out to be a showcase DLC – both in terms of scope and content.
The next big update for Age of Empires 4 is scheduled to appear in the springwhich also marks the start of Season 7.
By the way: If you log into the game now, you will receive a small reward as a thank you.

The TiMi Studio Group (Call of Duty Mobile, Pokemon Unite) and World’s Edge are bringing the popular strategy series to mobile phones. The first details about Age of Empires Mobile were now visible in Microsoft’s showcase.
The official release is scheduled to take place later in the yearbut players can already pre-register in the App Store and Google Play to take part in the beta tests.
The mobile offshoot is intended to adopt popular features and mechanics from the PC model. Here too you can expand your bases and prove yourself in real-time battles. The multiplayer mode also brings new siege battles. Here, too, you put together teams of historical and mythological leaders such as King Arthur, Caesar or Joan of Arc and go into PvE and PvP battles.
