Next please! Unfortunately, another well-known development studio is affected by a large wave of layoffs – this time Supermassive Games. The workforce of the makers of horror greats like Until Dawn or The Quarry is being trimmed down properly.
The still young year 2024 is still not a good one for the games industry. A number of well-known developers and publishers had already significantly reduced their workforces and put numerous employees on the streets – and there is still no end in sight in this regard. Now Supermassive Games is also affected!
The development studio behind horror greats like Until Dawn or The Quarry is laying off around 90 employees, which corresponds to a whopping 30 percent of the entire workforce. According to a report in the business magazine Bloomberg However, 150 employees are said to have been informed that their jobs are at risk, i.e. around half of the number of employees. The end of the flagpole may not have been reached yet.
Supermassive Games itself commented on the issue via social media and emphasized that it “deeply regrets” the layoffs. The job cuts are the result of a reorganization of the studio. The decision was by no means taken lightly and great efforts were made to avoid the current result – without success.
The horror experts are currently working with Behavior Interactive to develop a new game in the universe of the long-running Dead by Daylight. This already has a name with The Casting of Frank Stone.
As early as 2023, over 10,000 employees in the video game industry were thrown out on the streets, and in the still young year of 2024, over 6,000 more developers were already affected and now have to look for a new job.
