EA announced massive layoffs a few hours ago. And the veteran company is preparing to cut around 670 jobs. This represents approximately 5% of their total workforce.
EA said that as part of its restructuring it was looking to move away from developing games based on intellectual property licenses, as it did with the now legendary FIFA saga. But that creates uncertainty about which games fit that description. At least two of them have been confirmed safe. In a statement to GamesIndustry, An Electronic Arts representative confirmed that two of its upcoming titles, based on Marvel characters: Iron Man and Black Panther, are still in development.
What we know
Iron Man is in development at Motive Studio. responsible for nothing less than the exceptional Dead Space remake of 2023. It will be about a single-player action adventure game. It will use Unreal Engine 5 and is currently still in pre-production. The company’s job postings suggest it could offer an open-world environment.
Black Panther, meanwhile, is being developed by the new company Cliffhanger Games. In this case, it will be a single-player open-world action-adventure title.. It will reportedly feature expanded choice and consequence mechanics that will allow players to shape their own stories.
Reports had previously indicated that EA’s partnership with Marvel would also cover a third game, although its status and which character will play in it are unknown.
However, Not all of EA’s upcoming titles based on licensed intellectual property have survived the elimination. Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars universe single-player FPS inspired by The Mandalorian has been canceled. Hopefully both matches will continue without further problems.
