Dragon’s Dogma 2 releases March 22nd on most platforms and I checked it out at a preview event in New York City. In its practical preview for 2023 the high fantasy role-playing game, My city Senior reporter Ethan Gach said it’s “preparing to have all the tools necessary to become the widely acclaimed hit it deserves” – and I completely agree! What sold me on this was a new class that effectively turns your character into a medieval Force user. Move over, Darth Maul; There’s another player with double-bladed sabers in town.

A sequel to Capcom’s cult 2012 action-adventure game. Dragon’s Dogma 2 picks up wherever his predecessor stopped. After having your heart broken by a very mean dragon, you dare to prove once again that you deserve love by killing the beast. You recruit NPC minions called Pawns to travel with you, fending off all sorts of vicious creatures (like goblins and golems) and completing countless main and side quests as you uncover the whereabouts of the heartbreaking flying lizard. If that sounds very similar to the original the dragon’s beliefWell, it is, but that’s not a bad thing. Thanks to a larger open world and new game mechanics – including new skills for the different classes or “professions” –Dragon’s Dogma 2 really builds on what Capcom achieved over a decade ago. And the two new professions, particularly the dual-bladed Mystic Spearhand, underscore this creative development.

Lift rocks, throw in schlock DD2 with magic

The Sequel to Mystic Spearhand similar to the original game Mystical knight Both professions specialize in magic and melee combat. But that’s where the similarities end. The Mystic Spearhand is faster than the Mystic Knight and can quickly run across the battlefield thanks to its teleportation abilities. He also has a wider range of spells at his disposal, allowing you to strengthen your allies while dealing massive damage, allowing the class to take on the roles of “attacker”, “support” and “tank” at the same time. Additionally, the Calling can fire blade beams from her duo-spear and magical bolts from her fingertips, and can spin her weapon in a figure-eight motion to quickly increase the pain she inflicts. This class feels fantastic, especially when you’re dashing from enemy to enemy, using your double-bladed weapon as a blender and using spells to control the field.

But what really sold me was the ability to use magic to lift enemies and objects off the ground. By holding down one of the shoulder buttons, you can bring up a separate skill menu in the middle of battle. You create a blue-green ball that makes objects float in the air. So if you want to throw the stone at a chimera you’re fighting, you can do that. If you have just killed a wolf and want to use its body as throwing food, you can do that too.

I wasn’t able to test it on heavier enemies like cyclops and ogres, and it definitely doesn’t work on larger enemies like dragons and griffins. However, the ability to lift and throw almost any small to medium-sized object in your area opens up a variety of options when it comes to combos and damage output. Combine this with the Mystic Spearhand’s abilities to paralyze thugs, fire magic from her hands, instantly teleport to the opponent, and swing her duo spear in acrobatic fashion, and I couldn’t help but think I was the embodiment of one somehow ancient Darth Maul or… like an ancestor of the legendary Sith warrior. It prevails. And now this Dragon’s Dogma 2 blew up my favorite pastime from the first game StriderI’m sure I’ve found the new class that I’ll be running when the game comes out.

While I admit that my three-hour gaming session was plagued by some frame rate issues, particularly when roaming through densely populated cities, Dragon’s Dogma 2 still looks really good. The environments are highly detailed, the characters are expertly written and voiced, the combat is satisfyingly crisp, and the enemies are extremely clever. Everything that made up the original the dragon’s belief So good seems to be turned up to 11 here and I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds and when Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be released on March 22nd on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
