Unlike Quetzalcoatl in the Grasslands, the Mindflayer doesn’t have an elemental weakness, so figuring out how to take it down is a bit more difficult. To help you, we have explained how to beat the mindflayer in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth below, which includes how to avoid Mindflayer’s Psychotic Break attack.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Mindflayer location
The Mindflayer is located in the southern area of Junon, on the peninsula between a life source and the Junon Cache location, just above a Protorelic Fort Condor match. However, you must visit and complete all four Lifespring locations in Junon before you can summon Mindflayer there. The Mindflayer will then be marked on your map as “Classified Intel: Whisper in the Darkness”.
To quickly find Lifesprings, we recommend activating Remnawave Towers, as these display more World Intel locations when you press their red switches. Some Juno Lifespring locations are tricky though, so remember to watch out for the spring-seeking birds that lead you there if you get a little lost. You may need to swim or use the Juno Chocobo to reach them.
How to Avoid Mindflayer’s Psychotic Break in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
The only way to avoid Mindflayer’s Psychotic Break attack in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is to hide behind the falling rocks just before Mindflayer uses Psychotic Break. The rest of your party will follow the one you control during Psychotic Break, so you’ll only need to focus on getting one of your characters behind a rock.
It is important that you do this every time Psychotic Break is used, as the attack can instantly kill your party unless their health or defense is very high. Even then, it will be extremely detrimental to health.
We have more details on how to defeat Mindflayer below:
How to beat Mindflayer in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
The Mindflayer has 20,856 HP on Normal difficulty and no elemental weaknesses. Instead, you should use synergy abilities to pressure Mindflayer. Not to be confused with Synergy Skills, Synergy Abilities are unlocked in combat after enough abilities, skills, or special items have been used by multiple characters. Look for the two black and white lines that resemble the pause symbol next to an action, to see if it counts toward unlocking a synergy ability in combat.
If you’re in a dire situation, you can also use backline commands by pressing Triangle in the Commands menu when it appears, to use a synergy ability from party members not currently in combat. These count as normal synergy abilities, so they will also pressure Mindflayer.
Keep in mind that the Mindflayer has resistances and immunities to things like Sleep, Silence, Slow, and attack and magic reduction spells, so the best thing you can do until what you unlock the synergy abilities is by attacking it normally and not using magic. . For this reason, unless you need her to heal, we recommend not adding Aerith to your party.
Preparing for the fight
We recommend that you come with a team made up of Cloud, Barrett and Tifa, so you have plenty of physical attacks, strong pressure abilities, and can use Barret for your long-range needs. Equip the trio with whatever HP Up and Vitality Up Materia you have, instead of spells. You can use Healing Materia if you think you need it, but the Item Saver Materia can work better most of the time, as it lets you use items like potions without removing ATB charges – but it takes a while to refresh its use.
You can also equip everyone with the Auto-Unique Ability or Auto-Unique Weapon Materia, as they allow characters to use their special abilities and weapons without you having to manually command them to do so. This means that other members of your party can develop synergy abilities without you having to control them.
Mindflayer Boss Strategy
With all of the above information in mind, your strategy for defeating Mindflayer in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is to use Cloud, Barret, and Tifa’s abilities and items until they develop synergy abilities, then to unleash synergy abilities to put pressure on Mindflayer, as this is the Mindflayer’s only weakness.
To stay alive and do this, you should hide behind a rock right before Mindflayer uses the Psychotic Break attack
Besides Psychotic Break, the Mindflayer has projectile and AOE (area of effect) attacks. Go with a fast character (like Tifa) during projectile attacks, and try to keep attacking from afar while controlling Barret during an AOE attack, but remember to dodge when necessary.
Finally, unless the auto-unique ability or auto-unique weapon materials do all the work for you, remember to switch between characters and use their abilities and items to develop synergy abilitiesor you won’t be able to pressure Mindflayer, making him much harder to defeat.
When you’re under pressure and staggered, use your strongest attacks to take out as much health as possible before Mindflayer recovers to finally beat him.
Good luck facing Mindflayer!
