Editor’s tip: high-rise
Director: Ben Wheatley
Pour: Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller
If you’re looking for a dystopian thriller that’s also a scathing satire of gentrification and the callous isolation of the spoiled and rich, Ben Wheatley’s 2015 film starring Tom Hiddleston is a perfect recommendation.
Based on JG Ballard’s 1975 novel, skyscraper tells the story of Robert Laing (Hiddleston), a recently divorced doctor who moves into a modern block of flats on the outskirts of suburban London, equipped with every amenity one could wish for. It doesn’t take long for Laing’s time in the high-rise to turn into an endless bacchanal of drugs, alcohol and debauchery, culminating in the tragic suicide of one of Laing’s neighbors. When authorities fail to arrive to investigate the death and the high-rise’s condition becomes more and more dilapidated with each passing day, the block’s residents resort to their most animalistic instincts and bicker with one another as the once pristine tower transforms into a gilded cage of wanton, indiscriminate ones Violence and depravity.
Laurie Rose’s cinematography is hypnotic, capturing the tower’s brutalist interiors and impressive scale with the same care as the character’s most intimate and harrowing moments. Hiddleston is fantastic, as is Luke Evans as the documentary filmmaker turned violent extremist who clashes with the tower’s architect, skillfully played by Jeremy Irons. skyscraper
The Burbs
Director: Joe Dante
Pour: Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher
If you’ve ever been afraid or suspicious of what your neighbors might be up to, this comedic thriller from Gremlins Director Joe Dante has you covered.
Tom Hanks plays Ray Peterson, a disgruntled homeowner who just wants to be left alone so he can enjoy his week-long vacation. Unfortunately, a mysterious new family moves into the abandoned house next door to him on the quiet, sleepy cul-de-sac he calls home, igniting a firestorm of paranoia and mistrust that threatens to engulf the entire neighborhood. As screenwriter Dana Olsen I once described it
repayment
Director: Steven Knight
Pour: Jason Statham, Agata Buzek, Benedict Wong
There are several reasons I could recommend repayment (also known as humming-bird) at the moment. I still have a crush on Jason Statham The beekeeper. Benedict Wong, who plays a major role in the film, stars in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of ” 3 body problem, I play my favorite character from the book. And director Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) released a fascinating thriller show in April: The veilwith Elisabeth Moss and Josh Charles.
But the main reason I recommend it repayment is because it is one of the most underrated films in Statham’s filmography. It’s a thoughtful story of revenge and redemption that doesn’t always land, but it has a lot on its mind and demands more from Statham as an actor than many of his other roles. A content warning: This is a very dark film that deals with very dark plot points and themes, including sexual violence. —PV
