The company’s software engineers need to polish this video feature in their next big update.
The latest major iPhone and iPad software update brought big improvements to their operating systems. Particularly with a good number of design innovations in iPadOS 17. With the arrival of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, Apple engineers will have to continue to refine and perfect the system user interface.
Apple is expected to introduce big changes with many artificial intelligence features in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. But during its development, the Cupertino company must not forget to continue improving all the functions of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17.
One video feature in particular needs immediate improvement. We are talking about a multitasking function of the iPhone and iPad, it is the activation of Picture-in-Picture. It’s not as intuitive as it should be.so we took the liberty of designing a new video feature for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.
Apple needs to improve Picture-in-Picture in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18
Apple’s software engineers have been perfecting their operating systems for years and years. But perfection is unattainable and there are always small details to improve. Details like enabling Picture-in-Picture. It would take a little refocusing.
For anyone who doesn’t know about this feature present on iOS, iPadOS and macOS, Picture-in-Picture (PiP) allows iPhone, iPad and Mac users continue playing a video in thumbnail and overlay while performing other tasks or running other applications.
There are two different methods to enable Picture-in-Picture:
- By clicking on a small button in the upper left corner of a video.
- Swipe up to minimize the app playing a video.
What’s the problem, you might ask? Well, there are several actually. First, it can sometimes be a bit tricky to enable picture-in-picture via the video UI button, as it only appears when the video is playing in full screen. Yet, If you are watching a video, you need to go to full screen first and then enable Picture in Picture.
On the other hand, the other activation method Picture-in-Picture is also not the most effective in the world. If you minimize an app – be it Safari, Netflix, or any other – the Picture-in-Picture video thumbnail appears automatically. But what if you want to continue using the same app while the video plays? You have to open it again. Counter productive.
This is why we hope that Apple will improve this video function in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, for example, through a small drop-down menu that appears when you tap and hold on a video’s GUI. As we detail in a small concept that we have attached on these lines and that we have taken the liberty of designing.
