90s, analysis, beat, PopSlinger

Join former PopSlinger heroine Ria Carbon and Gin on an adventure to save their planet from otherworldly forces using their magic soda-filled guns.

Developed by the Funky Can Creative Mexican Studio, PopSlinger is a game released on PC and Switch last year and which is coming to Xbox consoles for the first time.

Saving the world with our soda-filled weapons

PopSlinger offers a pretty unique blend of style action beatem up and rhythm gameall in a world inspired by Japan and the 80s and 90s. Players embody Ria Carbon, a girl armed with soda guns, on a mission to save the world from forces from another dimension. Accompanied by her ally Gin, Ria fights against corrupted enemies known as “Hearts” in an adventure full of nostalgic touches and dynamic storytelling.

PopSlinger’s gameplay is both innovative and challenging, as well as requires matching enemies of the same color in combo chains to unlock power-ups and bonuses. This adds a certain strategic element to fast-paced combat, rewarding players for precise timing and careful planning. However, Some may find the difficulty spikes and long boss fights overwhelming.which will cause occasional frustrations during gameplay.

Technical and sound section

Visually, PopSlinger captures the essence of 80s and 90s nostalgia with its colorful pixel art style and its color-infused aesthetic. The character designs and animations are very good, while the background environments give off a retro feel. But despite the good visual work, the lack of indicators for Off-screen attacks can sometimes hamper gameplaycausing unexpected hits from enemies and occasional frustrations.

As for the sound, PopSlinger features a dynamic soundtrack inspired by a mix of genres, like funk and jazz. Themes are full of rhythm and complement the on-screen action, enhancing the audiovisual experience. Additionally, the English dub adds personality to the characters (the title is fully translated into Spanish).

Conclusions

PopSlinger offers a fresh and entertaining gaming experience that retro gaming fans will enjoy. While it has its flaws, such as occasional gameplay frustrations, the game’s unique premise and engaging mix of mechanics make it an interesting addition to the genre.
