Almost 30% of the top 100 Steam Deck games are unverified

Recently, Valve released a list of the 100 most played games Steam deck Games from the last 12 months. It’s fun to dig through so much data, and the full list is both a snapshot of the latest trends and a reminder that old favorites are among the most popular options on Valve’s portable PC.

On March 14th about two years after the release of the Steam Deck, Valve has released its list of the most played games on last year’s best-selling device as part of its ongoing Spring 2024 sales. According to Valve, this list of the 100 most played games on Steam Deck is based on daily active player counts between March 2023 and March 2024. Interestingly, Valve’s list does not care about a game’s Steam Deck status. This means that around 27 games, or 27 percent of the list, are unverified or even unsupported Steam Deck games.

Check out the full list, many games I expected to see here are listed here and above. However, there are also some real surprises and headaches. For example, Balatro– which came out just a few weeks ago – is in the top 30. Another recent release, Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor—an idle shooter spin-off of the FPS mining game Deep Rock Galactic– lands a few places lower at 39. As someone who has put many hours into both games on Steam Deck, I can confirm that they are perfect for the platform. (Funnily enough, this is the original Deep skirt Game is also on the list, but only just at 91.)

Another interesting entry on the list is Starfield. Many people play Bethesda’s open-world space RPG on the Steam Deck, even if the a not so great experience. In fact, Valve lists the game as “Unsupported,” but that hasn’t stopped people from playing it, contributing to the game ranking at number 46.

Looking at the top of the list, some older games dominate, including GTA V, Elden RingAnd Stardew Valley. But the top post goes to the huge RPG and kissing simulator Baldur’s Gate 3. It moved ahead vampire survivor, A game that many – myself included – feel fits the deck so perfectly that Valve should simply pay the developers to have it pre-installed on the device. While I prefer it vampire survivor, I completely understand that a turn-based, narrative RPG would fit well with the Steam Deck. Sometimes you want to snog a demon lady on the couch while watching Netflix. No judgement.
