2K honors 40 years of WWE not only through the beats, but breaks down the entire show.
Those of us of a certain age here remember weekend mornings watching Telecinco (the one with the golden 5 with the flower). Awesome guys in outrageously cut suits slapping each other and flying around the ring. Stories of friendships broken like chairs on the backs, looks of hatred and suffering on the canvas. Then we learned that it was all part of the show and that even though they weren’t done seriously beating each other, the tradition of their duels had already penetrated us. it was him Press the buttonThis is how we met him in Europe in the early 90s, but WWE celebrated its 40th anniversary and in 2K it pays homage to this trajectory by extracting archives and legendary matches. Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, André The Giant…we relive their best moments.
Winning is not enough.
If we review WWE’s best moments, we must learn to emulate them. There are fights in which the important thing is not to win. It’s show business and the costs of fame. It’s not about fighting. This is the spectacle that fills the stands.
In some confrontations there are missions with specific movements that must be completed correctly. Winning the first levels is not difficult. This can be annoying because with 4 hits you can exhaust the opponent’s stamina and life. These objectives within the fights make it more interesting and create routines to memorize and improve our combat system in the most conventional way.
The fight from all angles.
WW2K24 has too many game modes. Besides the “simple” and highly customizable combat, varying from the number of opponents to the combat rules, It has two career modes, two management modes, RogueLike and Showcase.
WWE ShowCase is a tribute to the 40 years of the brand. The most epic battles are revisited, mixing real images, video games and comments from the protagonists and analysts. In this mode, the requested movements must be completed, the story is recreated. There are main objectives, without which there is no progress in the fight, and secondary objectives which add more points to historical rigor. They are divided into phases interspersed with the real image. With the same combat control system, a different mechanic is created. It’s very exhilarating when it goes from control to video and it fits perfectly.
My Rise Unleashed, one of the “My Career” modes, also works with the objective system. Set in women’s wrestling, it goes from the independent circuit to WWE. Here again, the actions taken within the fight are more important than winning at all costs.
More traditional is the My Rise Undisputed mode. The men’s “My Career”, here you just ask to grow within the WWE until you are the champion no matter what. Both modes feature a large catalog of customization and participation in star cutscenes across this universe.
It’s not just about fighting. WWE is a very complete show. There are two management modes. MyGM is the wrestler’s manager for life. Earn money and be a great general manager. The universe leaves aside money (everything that wild capitalism allows) and focuses on the creation of characters. Choosing a player and creating the story: friendships, rivalries, desires… is a good way to show the show internally.
Cartitas and Roguelike Why not?
But here it’s 2K. Where does that make you take out your wallet? The game isn’t the window shopping we’re used to in NBA2K. Here we have battle pass and sticker packs.
The My Factions system is based on creating a squad of fighters from sticker packs (similar to those in Ultimate Team). You get them by fighting or buying them with VC purchased with real money. The expense is not necessary at all at the user level. In-game currency is easy to earn.
This game system can be compared to a Roguelike like Slay The Spire, but it is not a card game. There are real fights here, that’s why we came. But we have several paths that lead us to the final fight and we must take different directions to encounter random fights, upgrades or surprises. It’s quite entertaining and offers a lot of replayability.
Like everyone.
On a technical level, there is very little to say. Follow the same line as the previous ones.In my opinion, there is a lack of a jump in face captures, as they do in the NBA (to compare two 2K sagas).
That’s if inside the ring the blows and the choreographies breathe reality (because they never were, really). In this sense, it is a great success. Along with this, the facial expression sings more.
The gameplay is more fluid than the previous ones, never reaching the naturalness that one might ask for in order to chain the movements. But they have still improved a lot. The typing, tapping, and input capabilities make great use of each button on the controller.
Conclusions
This is not a wrestling game. It’s a simulation of one of the highest-grossing shows in the world. Stories of love, betrayal and fame, money and glory. and this game distills it all and makes you participate in it. With the exception of a few technical aspects, this is a very polished product made by people who know wrestling.
If I’m honest, I was imagining slots more than video games and I found the opposite.
