Dragon’s Dogma 2 is currently racking up plenty of high ratings, but is still getting a lot of flack for its technical qualities (or lack thereof). Capcom has now commented on this and praised improvement.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 seems, at least according to the first reviews, to be a real board. But as usual, there are dark spots on the halo, because as Capcom has now admitted, there are quite a few performance issues, especially on PC, that lead to an inconsistent frame rate.
Accordingly, the performance issues in the PC version of Dragon’s Dogma 2 appear to be due to CPU usage, which is a bottleneck. This becomes a particular problem when there are numerous characters on the screen at the same time, which increases CPU usage and causes frame rate drops. Certainly not uncommon given the large number of characters in the game. Capcom promises quick recovery.
“In Dragon’s Dogma 2, each character is allocated a large portion of CPU usage and dynamically calculates the effects of their physical presence in different environments,” Capcom said in a statement Statement to colleagues at IGN. “In certain situations where numerous characters appear at the same time, CPU usage can be very high and impact frame rate. We recognize that in such situations, settings that reduce GPU load may currently have only a limited effect However, we are looking for ways to improve performance in the future.”
There are also reports of unstable frame rates in the console version, which currently only has a 30 fps mode. If Capcom addresses the issue, we should hopefully be able to expect fixes soon.
Our review of Dragon’s Dogma 2 should hopefully be ready soon. Colleague Basti has been sweating and groaning at the game for a few days now, but something like this can’t even be done in a weekend.
