Starward Rogue is a twin-stick shooter with Rogue Lite elements developed by Arcen Games and published by Klabater
In Starward Rogue, fight your way through Megalith, a maze of thieves housed in the side of a star. Customize your mecha with a wide variety of weapons, perks and upgrades. Prepare for the dangers that await you in the depths of the dungeon in which you will have to defeat enemies in different rooms and final bosses who will put you in difficulty.
Gameplay and controls
Starward Rogue offers us a type of arcade game in which our main objective will be to eliminate the enemies that we find in each of the rooms on each floor. We will have a 360 degree movement that will allow us to move and aim in all possible directions, since we will need great precision to avoid the rain of shots that we will encounter.
We will have at our disposal a main weapon linked to the mecha with which we will play in each game, we will also have a secondary weapon and a skill that we can change as we progress in each of the rooms. In order to adapt to any combat situation, we will have at our disposal a “turbo mode” which will make us move at high speed and a “slow mode” which will allow us to be more precise in our movements when the situation requires it. required. .
Levels and duration
In each of our games or attempts in Starward Rogue we will have to overcome a total of 5 levels, each of them is made up of a series of procedurally generated rooms in which we will encounter different situations in the form of enemies. Mainly focused on defeating enemies and improving our mecha by obtaining new weapons and abilities.
The duration of the game is short since we will only have to defeat the 5 final bosses which are found in each of the 5 floors that make up our adventure, the duration will therefore not be very long. The fight against each of the bosses is interesting, since each of them has its own way of attacking and will test our ability to dodge projectiles.
The possibility of having different difficulty modes allows new users of this type of game to take their first steps in a game in which standing still is not an option. If we want a greater challenge we will have the last 2 difficulty levels that will drive us crazy more than once.
Graphics and sound
The section where Starward Rogue is weakest is surely everything related to the visual and audio aspects. The graphics are not at all original, they do not have their own identity since it seems that assets from generic ship games have been used. In everything related to the interface we find an interesting design that distributes the information well on the screen, although in a somewhat small font size.
Concerning the sound aspect of the game, we have some melodies that do not have a good effect on the title at all, since several sounds of different intensity are mixed which forced the music to be cut.
Progress
Without a doubt, the most interesting section of Starward Rogue is looking for the best options as we level up our mecha. To do this we will have to choose the correct option that we will have from a total of 3 each time we level up. We will also have the possibility of obtaining coins (credits) which will allow us to purchase a series of improvements as we progress. We will obtain these credits by destroying elements of the setting and we can even obtain them from enemies by defeating them.
The ability to perform different races with each of the mechs and how they differ from each other can encourage you to spend more time in the game and think more if you are looking to complete all the achievements.
Conclusions
Starward Rogue is a twin-stick shooter that can be a good gateway for newcomers to the genre. Short in duration but with some replayability thanks to a mecha progression and development system with some depth that encourages trying different things in the games. Graphically it leaves a lot to be desired and the truth is that we have not found new extras that bring something new to games of this genre.
