Final Fantasy 14: Road to Dawn A release date has finally been confirmed, but some Final Fantasy 9-themed items have raised some eyebrows.
Yesterday at PAX East, Square Enix finally confirmed that Final Fantasy 14’s next expansion, Road to Dawn, will launch on July 2, a week after Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree (yes, This seems to be intentional). That’s exciting enough for Final Fantasy fans, but one of the more subtly interesting parts of Square Enix’s reveal is that Road to Dawn will contain many Final Fantasy 9-themed items. One of the items is a pre-order bonus for the Clockwork Zidane Minion, and there are other in-game bonus items such as the Clockwork Garnet Minion and the Ark Mount, all from Final Fantasy IX.

During the panel, producer and director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida didn’t ignore Final Fantasy 9’s content, but he did play coy about it, saying “You may have noticed that there’s a lot of ” Final Fantasy IX reference…but the reason is a secret.” Now, this obviously raises some questions. What secrets might be hidden behind such a secret? There may always be a Final Fantasy 9-themed raid planned for the expansion, but it hasn’t been announced yet. Or maybe the long-rumored remake is finally actually happening.
Our own Alex says this is happening even though he doesn’t want such a thing, so these projects might just be laying the groundwork for such an announcement. E3 may be over, but early summer is still a big season for the release of games like this, so maybe we could see a Final Fantasy 9 Remake release this June. Remakes also appeared in Nvidia leaks a few years ago, featuring several unannounced games that later turned out to be real, such as Kingdom Hearts 4 and Hellraiser 2. Or maybe this isn’t a remake at all, but an animated version. series instead – but we’ll have to wait to find out.
