The PS5 Pro is obviously attracting the attention of gamers. But not only. The developers are also waiting and thinking about it a lot. We can learn more about it.
The PS5 Pro seems to be on the right track. And even though it hasn’t been made official yet, there are enough leaks and rumors that it could become a reality. The new console is sparking a lot of debate and, in addition to the players, there are also the professionals who are excited, asking questions and sometimes even worrying. It is precisely this type of reflection that interests us today and that we can discover through a video from the very serious media industry GamesIndustry.
The PS5 Pro, a console that comes too soon?
The video game development community is deep in thought over the unofficial but heavily speculated announcement of a PS5 Pro. At this year’s Global Developers Conference (GDC), several developers expressed their doubts about the need for a new version of Sony’s console, pointing out that they have not yet fully exploited the capabilities of the standard PS5.
According to GamesIndustry.biz’s Christopher Dring, who shared his thoughts on a recent podcast, there seems to be some reluctance in the industry. The developers surveyed have not yet felt the urgent need to switch to an updated version of the console, as they believe that the current generation of games has not yet reached its full potential. This statement highlights a possible mismatch between Sony’s business strategy and the creative ambitions of game developers.
Hardware too powerful?
Speculation about the PS5 Pro’s technical specifications includes a focus on backwards compatibility with the upcoming PS6, as well as the integration of Spectral Super Resolution technology, which aims to deliver performance in 4K at 120 FPS and 8K at 60 FPS. The GPU is rumored to be a hybrid design between RDNA 3 and RDNA 4.
In short, it’s hard, but not absolutely necessary in the current state? In any case, some game developers seem to explain this. In detail we hear (in the video above):
Some companies have said this won’t grow the market – it won’t be a game-changer. It feels like this generation hasn’t even really started yet, let alone felt the need for a mid-generation update. What if we just started developing and releasing original next-generation software?
This is in line with the words of Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two (publisher of GTA 6), who stated last year that mid-generation upgrades don’t change much and aren’t that important. Later in the video, this feeling becomes even more concrete when Christopher Dring says:
I’ll be honest, I haven’t met a single person who understood the meaning behind it. […]
As a result, the market will not grow. That won’t change anything.
Essentially, we can also understand from these various comments that it will be quite difficult to sell the PS5 Pro like the PS4 Pro at the time. The enthusiasm among developers seems to vary and the need is even lower. This situation raises important questions about the development of gaming consoles and the balance between technological advances and the real needs of content creators. The need for such an upgrade, taking full advantage of the current generation, is questioned by a section of the developer community, which calls for a focus on developing innovative and original software for the current generation before thinking about the next.
