“The mathematics when creating a game has changed”
In an interview with Polygon, Phil Spencer spoke candidly about the video game industry and about how “the mathematics of game creation has changed.”
Polygon spoke to Phil Spencer about the state of the gaming industry during GDC, the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Among the topics covered, we focused on increasing development costs and how that prevents publishers from taking risks.
“The cost reduces the risk that publishers are willing to take. While previous games had to sell a few hundred thousand units to justify their cost, new games may have to sell several million units. If you’re a publisher, you know that’s a pretty significant number in a world that already has many video games currently in development., Spencer commented.. “How are you going to establish that? Am I willing to take a chance on a new intellectual property, on a new type of game, when the risk of profit is so high? I think this diminishes the creativity of this industry, which does not excite me. “Creativity is the cornerstone of what we should be in gaming.”
Regarding exclusivity, everyone’s favorite topic, Phil Spencer said: “The case for exclusivity grows as the cost of the game increases. This is linked to the fact that the console market has stagnated, with little growth in the number of users over the past few decades. Other people’s customers are the key to your success.. You can only succeed if you attract customers from other publishers and other platforms. And since you can’t find new customers with the games you create, everyone is fighting for the same pie.”
