News culture “No limits” Sydney Sweeney is not afraid: she is ready to play any scene
She became known for her roles in the successful television series Euphoria and The Handmaid’s Tale. In 2024, Sydney Sweeney is making headlines for her unmemorable role in Madame Web. But everything was calculated. The American actress has a career plan in mind, which she implements methodically. She even claims to have “no boundaries”.
An actress on the rise, but…
Sydney Sweeney needs no introduction. She made her breakthrough in Hollywood with her striking and unconventional roles in the HBO series “Euphoria” and Hulu “The Handmaid’s Tale”. Two years later, it’s holding its own in The White Lotus and becoming a safe bet for SVOD services looking to capitalize on household names. Although her career began very early (in 2009 in the series Heroes), for many she is still the one who plays opposite Zendaya in Sam Levinson’s creation Cassandra “Cassie” Howard.
In 2024, she invites herself through the back door into the superheroic universe of the Weaver of the House of Ideas. Sydney Sweeney accepts the role of future Spider-Woman Julia Cornwall in Madame Web for reasons we’ll get into later alongside Dakota Johnson and Tahar Rahim. This new take on Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (or SSU) is getting trashed by critics – 12% on RottenTomatoes – and isn’t convincing anyone to pay for a movie ticket. Madame Web is struggling to break $100 million, effectively making it the worst failure in Marvel history.
A well-oiled strategy
Sydney Sweeney is well aware of the impact such a failure could have on her career, but everything was thought through in advance. The actress starred in “Madame Web” for one reason only: to get closer to the Sony bosses and “sell” them certain projects that are close to her heart. She also returned to that well-orchestrated strategy that bore fruit with our colleagues GQ :
For me, this film was a cornerstone as it allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without Madame Web, I would have no relationship with the decision-makers there,” she told GQ. “I make my career choice not only by focusing on stories, but also by making strategic business decisions. This allowed me to sell Everything But You and also get Barbarella. -Sydney Sweeney
On March 24, 2024, in the middle of post-promotion for Madame Web, Sydney Sweeney gave an interview Madame Figaro in which she talks about her next projects, including the horror film Immaculée. The actress plays Sister Cécilia, who is invited to a monastery in Italy. Unfortunately, their stay quickly turns into a nightmare. Afterward, The journalist asks her if certain topics might upset her. His answer is ambiguous to say the least:
I dont see any. I am very open and like to talk about everything. In my job as an actress, I take the same approach: I don’t set any limits in advance on the types of scenes I could play. -Sydney Sweeney
