A massive snowstorm has wreaked havoc in South Park and it’s your job to figure out how to stop it.
The South Park gang is back with a new opus. Departing from the RPG-tinged adventure of the previous two games, the most recent of which was Rearguard in Danger, In South Park: Snow Day, Cartman and his gang enter the realm of roguelike adventures with somewhat mixed results.
endless snow
This time we once again assume the role of “newcomer” while a terrible snowstorm occurs in the city. The school closed its doors and the children put their costumes back on to play war games and compete for glory. After several hours it seems the snow refuses to stop, so The kids of South Park have to find out what’s going on.
South Park: Snow Day! It is a game in which our character will have to advance through levels, fight other guys and face bosses in the form of members of the main cast of the series. We start each game with daggers, a bow and an arrow, but we unlock other options as we progress through the stage. Additionally, we have additional powers that can be used to help us in battle.like being able to set up a healing totem or use flatulence-based powers to propel ourselves into the sky, out of harm’s way and dealing poison damage to enemies.
Rogue-like gameplay
The combat itself is quite simple and is designed for cooperative mode. Some enemies carry shields, meaning you can only hit them from behind. This is a bit of a problem if you’re playing alone, but it’s much easier with partners. If you’re playing alone, bots will help you when a fight starts, meaning you’ll never be alone. However, They aren’t always that helpful, as they throw themselves into situations that often end their lives.. I spent one level running around trying to revive all my dead companions because the AI couldn’t stay out of danger for more than two seconds, which became a very frustrating task. Playing with others is the best way to play, but I hope the AI can be improved by releasing updates.
The roguelike elements of Snow Day are combined with other genres. At the start of each level, You can choose from three random upgrade cards that will improve your powers, weapons, or character.. You can find more cards during races and upgrade them before purchasing them. use toilet papera highly coveted resource after the snowstorm, in a direct parody of real life. Sometimes these upgrades can drastically change how a weapon or power works, so your wand, for example, can go from being a ranged flamethrower to shooting chain lightning. Otherwise, cards generally improve your business.
Since the upgrades for each run are random, you can experiment with a little bit of everything and find out what works and what doesn’t. In one of them, I got an upgrade that allowed me to use Cartman’s cat to urinate on my enemies, allowing me to take control of them and heal 50% of the damage they dealt to me.. That said, powers are charged during battle based on your Wrath Gauge, which fills as you deal or take damage.
Crappy cards to improve the game
At the start of the game you can also choose other types of upgrades, shitty letters. These cards are of limited use, but provide fairly powerful attacks when needed. One of my favorite abilities was using laser eyes, which came in handy when I was being harassed by multiple enemies. Enemies also receive crap cards and will activate them regularly during battle.disabling your weapon or turning your enemies into vampires, to name just a few effects.
We will collect dark matter in the games, which will be used to provide us with permanent improvements thanks to the Mr. Cairn, Christmas droppings. We can select up to thirty of them, so you can, once again, adapt your playstyle. We will also discover Henrietta hanging around the levels, offering to exchange your upgrades for dark matter, giving you paper extra toilet and, directly, improving what you have.
All that glitters is not gold
This all takes place around five levels, each of which lasts around an hour.. There is some randomness to aid replayability, but the story itself feels quite short for that reason. It’s like watching a very long episode of South Park. The humor you know and love is here, expanded to fit the gaming space. It’s not for everyone, but South Park never was. If you’re a fan of the series, that’s probably why you’re playing this game.since all the cameos from your favorite characters do not disappoint in their appearances.
Although the roguelike style is based on replayability, Once I finished the game, I had no reason to go back and do more. Yes, there are cosmetics to unlock and maybe weapons you haven’t tried, but that’s not enough incentive to make us want to come back. There are a few additional challenges available at launch via free DLC, but again, these are Very short content with little reason to return later. Depending on your friends and who you play with, laughter may accompany you, but this is missing when playing with the AI.
Conclusions
After the successes of The Stick of Truth and Rearguard in Danger, South Park: Snow Day! This is a smaller scale project that leaves a bittersweet feeling. Snow Day is an entertaining game with some good ideas, but at the same time, quite a few negative points.
