Nintendo’s next console is just around the corner – right? The next iteration of Mario gaming hardware, dubbed the “Switch 2” by people used to Sony unimaginatively adding numbers to the end of the PlayStation, will reportedly arrive in 2025, following a shift in the release window . The delay leaves those who have never gotten a taste of Nintendo’s current-gen catalog facing a difficult decision: Buy a Switch now or wait for a Switch 2 whenever it actually goes on sale? Backwards compatibility remains an unknown and is not one of Nintendo’s historical achievements.
But as gamers who have long stuck with the drift-prone hybrid handheld, other questions concern us. Mainly: What does Nintendo actually call this thing?
Nintendo is not a company that repeats the same concept over and over again. It loves gimmicks, and these harsh deviations led directly to the naming inspiration. A new gaming console that’s a cube? GameCUBE it is. A portable device with two screens? Quite simply: Nintendo DS. Even the 3DS and Wii U reimagined familiar names based on new technology. Unless the Switch 2 is a true successor console like the Super Nintendo – and the original Switch may be perfect enough to command such brand loyalty – the device’s name remains fundamentally unpredictable.
With that in mind, instead of guessing what name Nintendo might pull out of left field cap Cappy, we here at Polygon have spit out everything the company almost certainly won’t call a Switch 2.
