WWDC24 is getting closer and we analyze how Siri will evolve according to some evidence
It’s more than obvious that Siri is several notches below other assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant. This 2024 promises a lot since the new Apple operating systems will be presented at WWDC 2024 and also because rumor has it that he will be the Apple’s official debut with artificial intelligence features. iOS 18 should surprise us to see that Apple is working on what interests users and the competition. According to a review from Ben Lovejoy of 9to5Mac, there are clues that could give strong indications that the iPhone’s operating system will significantly improve Siri. We analyze it here.
Apple doesn’t release trending features at the same time as the competition, it does it slowly
Many know that Apple doesn’t jump on the trend bandwagon as soon as it appears. They always knew how to wait for their moment to do it. It’s gone from something so simple with iPhone camera lenses, the late AirPower and recently now with AI. One of these reasons is focused on privacy. They are not sure to release functions or features without be aware of what they will do with their users’ personal data. In short, those from Cupertino are not the same as other brands and they do not ask you who is the best in a certain function.
The rumors are clear, iOS 18 will be the biggest update in its history and AI will be present. Siri will benefit the most and we could see one of its big evolutions in its 13 year history, for example, will be powered by generative AI technology. Even Tim Cook has already given a tiny preview, they’re excited to share what they’ve been working on for a long time.
What are the strong indications of Siri’s improvement?
Siri isn’t the best on-device virtual assistant, it’s certainly one of the worst. You can control devices in a smart home, but if you try to give it a command involving a third-party app, your voice is tied up. It is said that Siri in an original way could integrate perfectly with different servicesthose from Cupertino eliminated these capabilities perhaps because of the confidence they had to have in their presentation so as not to play with other user applications.
Those from Cupertino, notably the Siri team, have been working daily on a new assistant named Viv, which, unlike Siri, does what is expected of a virtual assistant. Is this the new version of Siri we’ve been waiting for?
Interaction with apps via AI and user intent
There is already a solid example here and ChatGPT has done it. Siri can try to find out what we are going to ask and, in this case, interact with third-party services and applications. This would open the ability to see Siri perform multiple actions with apps to perform very complex taskssomething we might never have thought we would see.
Finally, this week a note relating to the development of Ferret-UI was published. This artificial intelligence model gives authentic use to the entire app screenseven taking into account small buttons that may go unnoticed by the human eye.
Its usefulness is not yet very clear but without a doubt Siri would have all the capabilities to be able to do everything, from booking flights to ordering in a restaurant. It is Apple that will finally decide whether it wants to fully engage in generative AI. How close are we to seeing this? The evidence is there, we will have to wait until June 10 to find out.
