We are in one of the peak moments of Fallout. Bethesda’s apocalyptic franchise is experiencing a moment of great popularity thanks to the recent premiere of the Amazon Prime Video series and, taking advantage of the moment, a Fallout 4 scriptwriter wanted to throw a curious wink at the fans.
Emil Pagliarulo served as writer and creative director of the 2015 work and it was on Twitter where he pointed out that the male protagonist of the fourth installment appears in the intro of the first video game. Specifically This is the soldier in power armor T-51 which we can see to the left of the other soldier executing a prisoner. You can see the moment from second 0:50 of the video you have just below.
“Given the good feelings of recent times and the millions of incredible fans of Fallout (that’s you!), I think the time has come to finally share a unknown link between Fallout 1 and Fallout 4. Do you remember the intro of Fallout 1? The annexation of Canada? SAME TYPE. (No, it’s not the one who shoots!)”, indicated Pagliarulo on the social network without taking into account the reaction of the fans.
And we have to take into account what kind of consequence does Nate, the main character of Fallout 4, be that soldier who seems to laugh at the execution. He lived before the apocalypse broke out and between 2072 and 2077, The United States unabashedly annexed Canada like their territory. Nate was a member of the US military, so it is entirely possible that he participated in military operations under that layer of metal.
What was the problem? Many disagree that Nate is a ruthless person and, coupled with the fact that Pagliarulo is believed to have actually created the connection out of thin air, the tide of criticism has followed. Just four hours after revealing the wink, Pagliarulo had to retract it in a short Twitter thread.
Wow, I wanted to share what I thought was a cool Fallout fact without realizing how controversial it could be. I should have known better. I act stupid when I get excited… and I get very excited. Not all information I share about Fallout is automatically canon. Nate is NOT a war criminal!
When you’re creating a world and building characters, you have a LOT of personal canon. You are always organizing ideas. At first, we talked about how that could be Nate, in that video. He had been through hell as a soldier. Every day was another unknown horror. This was one of them.
So internally, it was a cool nod to the original Fallout and a way to fictionally frame the character. It wasn’t shared with the player because it was never intended to be who YOU think Nate is. To a player, Nate’s military background is whatever you make it out to be. THAT is canon.
