After months of development, and progress in the form of betas, Kodi has finally released its 21 Omega version in a stable manner. And it can now be downloaded on all compatible devices, including Android and Android TV. Do you want to have it on your TV or media player? You have no choice but to take care of the APK: the Google Play version is not yet up to date.
For a new app to be listed in the official Android store, it must pass Google’s checks and target a minimum API version. This requirement is difficult to meet for developers who want to maintain support for very old Android, VLC directly suffers from this. Even Kodi itself struggles to keep its Google Play app up to date, this isn’t the first time it’s seemed outdated.
Kodi 21 Omega can only be found on Kodi GitHub. For now
There’s no bigger problem when it comes to updating your version than downloading the latest APK and installing it from the downloaded file: Kodi will update instantly. Now though, It’s not that easy to do on an Android TV like on an Android mobile, since the TV or player requires a few additional steps.
Kodi 21 Omega was recently released in its stable version and the update may still take some time to appear on Google Play. If you want to receive news on your Android TV as quickly as possible, you need to do the following:
- Access this link from your Android mobile.
- Tap the icon that corresponds to your system, Android.
- Select “ARMV8A (64BIT)” and accept the download. If your Android TV is very old (very old), you may need to download the 32-bit version.
- Click on the downloaded file and accept the installation/update.
- Install the Send Files to TV app on your television (or player) with Android TV and on your mobile. It’s on Google Play.
- Install a file manager on your Android TV. We generally recommend File Commander, although any other will do as long as you go to the package installer (most of them).
- Open Send files to TV on the TV and also on your mobile. Follow the steps to get to the main screen with “Send” and “Receive” in large letters. Both must be connected to the same WiFi network for the transfer to work.
- Tap “Send” on your phone and find the Kodi APK file. Then select your Android TV.
- The file will have been sent to your TV or player: by default, it will be stored in the “Downloads” folder.
- Since Send files to TV cannot install an APK (at least for now), you need to open the file manager.
- Find the downloads folder, click on it apk from Kodi, accept the installation from unknown sources and install the application.
With this process your Kodi will be updated to 21 Omega and you will not have to wait for the Google Play Store version to update. And as for new features, the developers have included support for FFmpeg 6, conversion for Dolby Vision, improved gaming control, and notable stability and compatibility improvements.
