Of course, you might want to keep the monster train rolling, and you’re looking for something new to bite into. Luckily for you, this anime season has a huge monster anime for you that looks well worth spending some time watching: Monster No. 8.
The first episode of Kaiju No. 8, based on the manga of the same name, was released just last week and is available on-demand on Crunchyroll and even live-streamed on Twitter (I mean X) as the episode airs to international audiences. Like all good monster media, Monster 8 focuses first and foremost on the people, but it focuses specifically on the people who must clean up the corpses of the monsters after they are dismantled.

The show follows 32-year-old Kafka Hibino, who wants to join a team called the Defense Force, a group of specially trained soldiers who aim to destroy monsters, all because His promise to his childhood friend. The only problem is, life doesn’t turn out the way he hoped and he has to deal with the monster’s guts filled with feces (even though it’s an important job helping society). However, this is a manga/anime, and of course it’s different from the usual monster plot: for some reason, a small, winged, worm-like monster worms its way into Kafka’s body, and he transforms into Became a humanoid monster. oops!
As expected, this is the end of the first episode of The Sting and it will leave you wanting to know more, and as someone who hasn’t read the comics I can’t even hint at what you’re going to do, but I can tell you that in fact, I’m addicted. I was obviously expecting some big action set piece with Kafka going head-to-head with monsters in his special transformed state, but what I loved about the first episode was the focus on the realities of living in a world where monster attacks are commonplace .

Normally, you might think that The Wehrmacht (which features a team led by Kafka’s aforementioned friends) would be the focus of a series of this type, but that’s not the case, instead we get protagonists who are essentially typical workers. The characters are quickly defined and likable too – Kafka is a carefree man, yes, he doesn’t like dealing with dirty intestines, but he does it whenever he’s asked. There’s also Reno Ichikawa, a young new co-worker who’s a bit standoffish at first, and could be said to fit the Arrogant archetype of being cold, stern, but genuinely caring about others. Their dynamic, while not fully fleshed out in one episode, is charming and fits my favorite types of friendship dynamics, the smiling goofball and the grumpy but sweet jerk.
I still have a lot to discover in Monster No. 8, as I think Kafka will only be in action in monster form this week, but regardless, it still feels like the anime I’m most looking forward to watching this season When I want some good, silly fun. I do hope it calms the bowels down, though.
