Artificial intelligence has been used in phones for a while now, but the sudden explosion of features in recent times has catapulted it into the mainstream.
Where Siri and Google Assistant are totally dependent on your voice, new smartphones now come with serious software that could revolutionize the way you use your phone.
We’ve gotten to the point where AI could play a major role in deciding which phone you buy. Technically, all phones have AI in one form or another, but these are the ones that make the best use of it.
Recent flagship Samsung phones
Samsung was one of the first companies to bring AI to the forefront of its phones. It was initially just the Galaxy S24 line, but it has already been expanded to many older flagships.
has various features as part of its selling point, so you can see how seriously new software features are taken.
One of the most useful AI tools is Circle to searchwhich lets you draw a circle around anything on the screen (either with your finger or the S Pen, depending on the device) and the topic will instantly be Googled so you can find out more.

Live translation is another little gem, as it will automatically (and in real time) translate voices from other languages into your native language. It is also accompanied by a text transcription. Essentially, it’s the universal translator for Star Trek. When you speak on the phone, the recipient will hear your words in their language, then respond and you will hear your language instead. Crazy stuff.
Using almost the same technology, Help with transcription
Chat support continues that vibe, giving you the ability to change the tone of emails and messages to make them more casual or professional. It can also summarize web pages and then translate the results into 35 different languages.
AI Photo Editing is something you may have seen on a Google Pixel ad, but Samsung’s implementation is even more impressive. With Generative photo editing, you can fill in gaps left in an image if you want to move a subject to another part of the photo. It can also create new frames in video footage, which means you can turn any normal video you’ve captured into slow motion.
One thing to keep in mind is that Samsung’s terms and conditions state that AI features are free until the end of 2025, but we don’t know if the company will charge for them after that date.
Recent Google Pixel phones
Google Pixel phones are known for their cameras, so it’s no surprise that much of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro’s core AI features focus on visuals and audio.
One of the most famous tools on Pixels is the Magic Eraser. It is an intelligent AI-based photo editing suite that allows you to remove objects or people from the background, change the lighting and move the subject to another part of the scene (the background being automatically filled).

Best catch is another useful feature, as it allows you to take multiple photos of people, then select the best facial expressions from the different options and easily combine them into a single image. However, this is also a controversial issue.
On the video side, Audio Magic Eraser can remove car noises, blowing winds, or other extraneous noises that would otherwise spoil your images.
You also benefit, as with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, from Circle to search functionality, in addition there is a To summarize in Recorder which can show you highlights of a meeting you recorded, this is all done offline thanks to Gemini Nano AI which is on the device itself. There is also Call screenwho acts as your personal secretary and speaks to a caller on your behalf, live transcribing what they say so you can choose whether to take the call or not.
Live translation is amazing for travelers because it can instantly translate spoken words, texts or signs from one language to another. And of course, you always have the Google Assistant to help answer your questions and complete simple tasks via voice commands.
All of these features are available on the latest Pixel phones and will no doubt get new additions when the Pixel 9 series launches later this year. Google also makes them available on older models, many working on devices as old as the Pixel 6a.
Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra
Another smartphone that gets smarter this time around is the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra. It has some AI features similar to those mentioned above, although Asus says they will all come at a later date with a software update, so if you already own the phone you won’t be able to use it yet. these features at the time of purchase. in writing.
There is a live translation feature, called Call translator, which works like that of the Samsung S24 series where phone calls are translated while you speak and listen. We noticed it was a little slower and less precise than the Samsung equivalent, but still a useful feature.
A very interesting feature is Noise cancellation. As the name suggests, this cuts out all the environmental noise when you’re on a call, allowing the recipient to hear you clearly even if you’re in a noisy restaurant or train station.

Transcriptions is another feature similar to that of competing handsets, with voice recordings automatically transformed into text and the ability to summarize them.
There is also the possibility of using AI Generative wallpaper which can create bespoke images from prompts you give, as well as semantic search which allows natural language clues to search within images (although this didn’t work very well in our review).
Xiaomi 14 Series
Chinese giant Xiaomi is also throwing its hat into the AI ring with this generation of its smartphones. Both the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Ultra offer interesting applications of the technology.

One of the most fun features is the AI Portrait, which you can train by taking multiple selfies of yourself so the phone learns your face. Then it can create fake selfies of you in the situation you describe. Do you want to be an astronaut on Moob? Suddenly, there you are. It’s not the most sophisticated feature on this list, but probably the most fun.
There is also AI across the devices’ wide range of photographic modes and capabilities, with specialized modules for toning, lighting effects emulation, as well as merging RAW images to create a single image with wide dynamic range.
Since the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is primarily a professional camera with a phone attached, it’s no surprise that the majority of the AI improvements are in this area of the device.
Motorola Moto Edge 50 Series
Motorola recently announced its Moto Edge 50 series, including the Edge 50 Fusion, Edge 50 Pro, and the flagship Edge 50 Ultra in European markets.
They come with Moto AI, which includes some interesting and fun features. There is the Generative wallpapers which can create backgrounds on your phone based on a pattern or fabric that you take a photo of with the camera.
Motorola
The cameras feature AI enhancements like adaptive stabilization to keep footage smooth, while Google Photos tools Magic Eraser, Remove blur from photosAnd Magic Editor are now available on any device, including iPhone.
At the time of writing, we haven’t had a chance to review the new Motos, but so far they appear to offer excellent AI tools at more affordable prices than most other options in this list.
But before long, expect all the best smartphones to put AI at the forefront.
