2019 was a busy year for the sport. Other major releases were released in the last 12 months, but there were also a number of releases in 2019 that feel very broken or outdated. There was a feeling that this generation of comforters had hit the point. Many games were almost uninteresting in basic consoles. This year has felt like everyone, publishers, developers, etc., forcing these consoles one year ago.
This was also a year of great diversity. I feel like almost every genre and platform I've found something to play this year. I rounded up more platforms in 2019 than I have in a long time. Some days my Xbox is on, other days my PC where I was playing, sometimes I was on PS4, other days my PC was changed. Even my PSVR headset and my phone have received a ton of performance this year.
So let's not waste time and instead here are my top 10 games of 2019. This is not organized, until the end when I wrote my last favorite game of the year.
Wolfenstein Youngblood
I know some are disappointed with the new installment in the modern era Wolfenstein series. They don't always like the online feature, co-op or small size. But I had a blast with this game. I played it alone, yet I loved it. I honestly think I like it more than the last one Wolfenstein
Come out
While the internet is obsessed with being a goose, I was particularly fond of being a dangerous gorilla. Come out eye-catching, but it also has one of the best soundtracks of 2019. The way the gameplay and music combine is perfect and makes this a great game to watch and play. And it feels really good. Hits feel hard and slams feel powerful.
Borderlands 3
Look, I totally understand and appreciate the criticism other people have for this game. But I still love the loot mix and the action Borderlands 3 provides. And this time around the fight feels so much better, the game looks better and we get to explore completely new planets. My GF and I spent a lot of time there Borderlands 3 and I can't wait to play more when the new DLC starts coming out.
Luigi's House 3
I bought a switch, not at the ports or indie games, with some comfort of that. I bought a switch for similar games Luigi's House 3. When Nintendo releases something good, it's GOOOOOOD. Also Luigi's house 3 is real good. The game looks unbelievable and feels like a machine that could be the best video game of 2019. And that music!
Surprising Death
I hesitated to put this game on my list. In fact, I deleted it and replaced it three times while writing this list. I seriously, no joke, I hate the last hours of this game. Drag on and on. Anyway I love building zip lines and roads. The feeling of crossing a large map area, turning it just up the hill and turning and building ziplines all the way back is amazing. The way other players can help each other, leaving markers and building structures in the world, is very interesting and I hope many games do the same thing.
Star Wars Jedi: The Fallen Order
Similar to Surprising Death, there are some major parts of this game that I hate. I enjoyed the narration, everything star Wars References and the world But I despise it Soulsborne game design. I just hate it and this game is REALLY a Soulsborne something inspired. But my dear star Wars the idea of tasting kept me going and I beat the game with a heavy second difficulty. And that concludes people, wow.
The Outer Worlds
Fallout: New Vegas it's still my favorite game of all time. And in time The Outer Worlds it's not that game, it's close enough that I was happy. Sure, the worlds feel so small, but the dialogue is well written and I love the friends.
Resident Evil 2
Did you forget that this game came out this year? Don't feel bad. It never came out this year, but it was. I loved this remake. It took some of my favorite parts, editing and story, and combined them with my favorite things to come out RE4
Gears 5
I suck Gears of War, has always been and will always be. Also Gears 5 feel like it's a huge step forward for this series. Kait is a great character and I loved learning more about her and how she connects to the mainstream Gears the atmosphere. Open campaign segments around the world worked well and the last election was brutal. I honestly don't believe they will, perhaps, create two separate stories Gears 6. And I'm excited to see how it all works.
And finally, my favorite game of the year …
Control
Some years it's hard to pick your favorite game. And then some years you play something that clicks with you so hard and fast that you fall in love with it and it becomes your confidence. For me, in 2019, that was Control.
I haven't played a game like this in a long time. This is the kind of game where I start to think of side stories that I would love to write or hear. The kind of game where I delete all the content I can find and then continue playing. I loved finding new pieces of text and ancestry. I spent hours reading all the files and documents I found, including this strange world.
And it's a very good game. I've played on the PS4 Pro, which has some performance issues and I'm still impressed. I'm genuinely excited to play this game again on PC sometime. I can't wait Control DLC to start hitting again. Give me something else Control, for ever and ever.
