Digital Foundry’s latest project was the recently announced Grounded port for the Nintendo Switch and they came with mixed feelings. The Switch version of Grounded has some serious compromises in the visuals department with virtually every visual effect compared to the original on Xbox consoles, which you can see in the comparison video below. If you don’t have time for a video, then Reset Era member Jinx readily provided the following summary:
- Switch significantly reduced visual value (1/3 download size, significantly reduced textures and drawing in the distance), same visual settings on docked and handheld devices with different resolutions
- Switch has motion blur, depth of field, light pipes, character shadows and all volumetric effects completely removed.
- The Switch has plenty of appearances throughout the game and the framerate is a decent solid 30fps, but frame times are all over the place, including semi-proper traversal jerks
