As the name indicates, Landlords is a city builder about managing a medieval village. They help him grow, fight bandits, and eventually take part in larger military campaigns. But none of this is a ton of success if you can’t get families to move in and help your society grow, and some players seem to be struggling on that front. “I have houses, the homeless won’t take them,” wrote one player in the Discord. “Approval is NOT the problem here. I was at 90% before the homeless came.”
The The most wanted game on Steam ahead of its early access launch today, Landlords has grown to over 150,000 concurrent players without including all players using Game Pass for PC. That’s what pushed it forward Helldivers 2 measured by the total number of current players and made it the top seller on Steam Counter Strike 2. It’s all good news for the developers of Slavic Magic and its publisher Hooded Horse, and it’s all apparently contributed to a record number of unhoused farmers.
Players start with just a few groups of villagers, some basic resources, and a single ox. First, they work in camps to harvest resources and produce lumber. Eventually, they should move from the camps into houses that the players have built with them, leading to a virtuous cycle of hard-working workers, growing villages, and a happy population. Except some players can’t seem to get their thralls to obey this. It sounds frustrating, but also hilarious.
“So I built my first few houses, but families aren’t moving in.” wrote a player on Steam. “Instead I still get the homeless alerts…” Some wonder if it’s a mistake. “I ALWAYS have 5 people who are homeless all the time, even though I have more than enough developed properties there is nothing I can do about it.” wrote a player on the Landlords Subreddit. “I swear to God I came across a bug. My five original families are not moving into the houses that were built, but every new family that comes into town has moved in, so now four families have moved in and five are homeless, even though I have enough burgage and half is empty.” , a third wrote on Discord.
So what’s going on here? Are there gremlins in the Landlords Early access code, or do players just need a few days to understand the intricacies of the realistic management simulation? “We have seen the same reports,” said Hood Horse spokesman Joe Robinson My city in an email. “Although on the surface it may seem like this is the same problem at the highest level, there are a few things that could happen. Some are intentional, others are related to known bugs that are already being fixed.”
A current cause of homelessness is a well-known flaw that prevents the reconstruction of burned-out homes. Another more diabolical flaw is that upgrading the initial family camps causes them to not move to nearby castle properties until you do so demolish the camps. Even if you solve the problem of homelessness, the corresponding negative modifier may remain for a while. “We are investigating a possible bug where the penalty lasts longer than expected, so we are unsure about this case,” Robinson said.
This is just the first day of Landlords“Early Access journey as player feedback helps Slavic Magic deliver on the ambitious promise of its medieval strategy game.” I’m sure players will discover even stranger bugs and quirks as they try to figure out what makes it tick Landlords ticking and I can’t wait to find out what they are.
