If you’ve ever wondered what’s actually inside a Nintendo Switch cart, wonder no more, dear reader. On YouTube, Tinker Man Mick was uploaded by Short (okay, it was uploaded in July 2023, so we’re a little late, but who cares) to show that some Switch carts actually have quite a bit of empty space.
If you open up the copy of Let’s Sing 2021, you can see that the inner panel does indeed fill the entire case, while the copy of Super Mario Odyssey actually has quite a bit of unused space. The video is titled ‘Why is Nintendo doing this?’, but we think it’s pretty obvious. The Switch cart is pretty small to begin with, so making it even smaller would undoubtedly make it harder to handle, and leave a lot less room for publishers to attach their printed game labels.
In fact, the whole thing resembles the NES cart that was much bigger in the west than the Famicom cart in Japan. However, despite being larger, the panels inside were basically the same size. Of course, this was very much a design decision by Nintendo, with the cart itself being front-loaded into the NES console.
Still, it’s cool to see what’s actually inside the Switch cart. We admittedly did not separate anything from ours; they are simply too precious for us!
