Walkie-talkie style apps are always trendy, a new competitor recently debuted on Android to bring the fleeting voice conversations to our phones: TenTen is a simple application that focuses only on the push-to-talk system. And he does it really well.
Push and talk, the basic mechanics of the walkie talkie, no longer makes sense with the mobile phone and its free calls via WhatsApp and other applications. However, this mode of operation still has a certain appeal, in particular because of the uncertainty of not knowing who will speak or what they will say. This is where TenTen stands out, a walkie-talkie application that is gaining popularity thanks to the simplicity of its approach.
TenTen, a walkie-talkie for talking with friends
The application is a more or less standard social network, although it is also aimed at private communication. To use it, you not only need an account on the platform, but also friends who use it: despite the walkie-talkie style operation, TenTen does not allow speaking openly. All communications take place in the private sphere: anyone participating must give their authorization.
As soon as you create an account, for which it is necessary to register by email, Google or TikTok, TenTen requests access to three basic authorizations: notifications, microphone and contacts. They are all logical, it is not for nothing that the application only works with friends and must record voice for audio messages from the walkie-talkie. We have tested the operation and mechanics of use without encountering any complications, although it is necessary to clarify its implication in the area of confidentiality.
The TenTen interface is kept to a minimum so that there is virtually no button press to talk, friends who will be included in the audio conversation and nothing else. The rest is as you would imagine from a walkie-talkie:
- TenTen will receive audio from whoever is speaking within the voice group.
- The application will reproduce the intervention in real time, whether it is in the foreground, another application is used or the screen is turned off.
- TenTen respects Do Not Disturb mode: If active, the message “Do not disturb” will appear to the rest of the users. Messages will not ring on this phone.
- The notification will appear when someone intervenes, but it will only be a warning: the audio is not transcribed and cannot be retrieved either. Everything said disappears.
The operation of TenTen is that of a walkie talkie with private sessions: Anyone who is not in the friend group will not hear the messages. It’s a perfect application for meeting up with friends, going on an excursion, for a work group or similar. Free, with no in-app purchases or ads.
TenTen has recently gained popularity thanks to the push from TikTok. It has been running on iOS since 2022, and the Android version appeared on the Google Play Store in April. The application is suitable for Android 10 and above.
