With the release of the currently highly praised VR title Half-Life: Alyx, Valve breaks the long silence and chats easily about the whole series, but also other games like Portal and Left 4 Dead.

The release of Half-Life: Alyx has meanwhile largely silenced the years of hopes and rumors about a Half-Life 3 or at least the long-lost Episode 3. Valve himself is unusually talkative these days and gives plenty of information about what has been going on in recent years, what to expect and what is not.

Also about a sequel to Half-Life: Alyx is already being talked about. At least another half-life game should not take several years to complete. But first you want to wait and see how the current game is received and how well it sells before you make a decision whether the next part will be a VR title again. The chances are pretty good, because reviews around the world are overwhelming with enthusiasm and even call the title the new VR benchmark.

However, it looks less good for another Left 4 Dead. Valve has now made it clear that the series has been on hold for some time and is not working on a new part. Any leaks that were speculated were based only on internal tests. However, more concrete were plans for a portal VR, which were quickly discarded, however, because the high degree of mobility and the many spatial leaps in VR could hardly be implemented.

Valve also explains why neither Half-Life: Episode 3 nor Half-Life 3 have been released. Half-Life 2 had already made the mistake of developing the engine and game in parallel, which enormously extended the development time. This resulted in the episode concept, which failed in the case of the third episode due to the fact that the developers wanted to pack more and more into the episodes, which ultimately could not be handled. As a result, Valve focused entirely on Source Engine 2, which was released in 2015 before developing Half-Life: Alyx.

At least the team had a lot of fun developing Half-Life: Alyx and there is still hope that Valve and Half-Life will once again become living elements of the game world.
