What if a game show turned one of its games into a video game? Is that confusing? Well, it happened. On the 1st of May Dropout TVis Sam Reich, moderator of the Internet Game show/social experiment Game changerannounced the release of a new video game based on a specific game played in a recent episode of the series.

Like other episodes of the series, the premise of which is that contestants must play out changes every time, most of the fun in “Deja Vu” comes from watching contestants figure out the crucial twist and work to outsmart host Reich . The meeting, aptly titled “Deja Vu,” pits three participants against each other in a series of challenges that they must repeat over and over again. In addition to challenges like solving math problems or answering general trivia questions, one asked players to navigate a video game maze whose theme matched the show’s colorful set design.

This game is Now available Available for free in the indie game shop itch.io (The password to play is GC123). While Reich repeated the phrase “I made a game just for you” throughout the episode, he didn’t actually create this video game – the credit goes to indie developer Colin Watterson. Reich notes that the game “works well on PC, but poorly on Mac.” As in the episode of Game changer, players attempt to navigate the maze by going either left or right at several intersections. A series of hilarious deaths await players who choose the wrong path. According to a Behind the scenes video According to Dropout, the deaths were intended to “feel both random and like a loving parody Oregon Trailsaid Reich. The deaths are caused by mishaps such as inserting a cotton swab too deeply into the ear or getting water into the wrong pipe while drinking. However, if you were paying attention during the episode, you already know which path to take to victory.

Behind the scenes of the episode, Reich revealed that it wasn’t just the maze that was inspired by the game’s design. The entire concept of Deja Vu (repeating a series of events over and over again and getting better and better) was inspired by indie platformers Celeste, giving the players themselves plenty of deaths and restarts. This is the sixth season of Game changer and Reich says he’s started to take more inspiration from game design, so hopefully we’ll see even more imaginative (and perhaps familiar) gadgets in the future. I say put the dropout cast in Battle Royale. My money is on Amy Vorphal coming out first and Katie Marovitch coming out on top.
