Wednesday, Tim Burton’s version of The Addams Family was, of course, hugely popular on Netflix. Both are staples of creepy goth teens the world over, so it was a match made in heaven (or hell?) and the series spent 20 weeks in Netflix’s global top 10. Jenna Ortega’s sharp, sardonic take on the character charmed many – as did her company’s stance against love triangles.
“Nobody wants to see her in the middle of a love triangle,” Ortega said In the magazine in 2022. “They want to see her torture people.”
In January 2023, Netflix officially renewed the supernatural adventure for young people, although there was little news (likely due to the ongoing strikes last year). But with filming starting this week and some exciting casting announcements, here’s everything we know about Wednesday Season 2.
What is Season 2 on Wednesday about?
We’re not entirely sure of the plot, but it will likely continue on Wednesday next school year at Nevermore Academy. According to the showrunners, the entire Addams family will come to school in some capacity. There were a lot of unanswered questions last season, including the identity of Wednesday’s stalker and the strange cult that mean girl Bianca’s mother belongs to.
Who is in Wednesday Season 2?
Jenna Ortega returns as Wednesday and will also serve as a producer this season. Other recurring cast members include Emma Myers as Wednesday’s sassy werewolf roommate Enid; Joy Sunday as school queen bee Bianca; and Hunter Doohan as Tyler, the sweet barista who is actually the bloodthirsty monster that killed many people last season.
The other Addams Family cast members, namely Catherine Zeta-Jones (Morticia), Luiz Guzmán (Gomez) and Isaac Ordonez (Pugsley), were promoted to series regulars.
“We are thrilled that the entire Addams family will be enrolling in Nevermore Academy this season, along with a dream cast of icons and new faces,” showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar said in a statement to Netflix. This makes sense for Pugsley, but will Morticia and Gomez be teachers or students? Are you perhaps pursuing a college degree?
who is not Come back?
Even though Tyler was released from prison at the end of the first season, Doohan is still a regular on the show – clearly there’s still some unfinished business! But Jamie McShane, who played his father, will only appear in a few episodes. Also, Percy Hynes White, who played the other boring, sweet boy Xavier, will not be returning. This is consistent with Sexual assault allegations led to a campaign to remove him from the show.
Is there anyone new to the cast of Wednesday’s second season?
You know it! Some big names will be joining the new Wednesday season as series regulars. According to Netflix’s Steve Buscemi (Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams) will play a character named Barry Dort and Billie Piper (Doctor Who) will play someone named Capri. Other actors joining the series as regulars include Evie Templeton (Return to Silent Hill), Owen Painter (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Noah Taylor (Park Street), although their roles are yet to be announced.
Additionally, we have some interesting guest stars, including Christopher Lloyd, who played Uncle Fester in the 1990s Addams Family films. Last season, Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in these films, was the big villain of the series, so it will be interesting to see what involvement Lloyd has in this. Thandiwe Newton (Westworld) will be someone named Dr. Fairburn will play and Joanna Lumley will play the Addams family’s grandma. Other guest stars include Frances O’Connor (The missing), Haley Joel Osment (The Kominsky method), Heather Matarazzo (The Princess Diaries) and Joonas Suotamo.
When does season 2 come out?
Filming began in May 2024, at the earliest Wednesday Season 2 would only be released at the end of this year. However, early 2025 is more likely.
In the meantime, where can I see more Wednesday?
The first season is on Netflix, but if that’s not enough, you can also watch “Wednesday” by Christina Ricci in the 1990s films, both of which are currently streaming on Pluto TV. This will particularly prepare you for the role that Christopher Lloyd will play in the new season. The 1964 sitcom is also streaming on Pluto TV. Oh, and there’s the 2019 animated film, but we’re not really talking about that here.
