The iPad Pro is now Apple’s most advanced device, at least in terms of Apple Silicon. What started as a spin off of the original iPad to reach those who asked the highest performance in a tablethas become the spearhead of the brand.
If in previous generations we already benefited from a fantastic screen, a huge canvas and a few improvement aimed more at creative professionals, for this new model, Apple has pulled out all the stops. Starting with the heart, which incorporates the most advanced Apple Silicon processor available.
New iPad Pro M4, new horizons
The technical specifications of the iPad Pro M4 are a waste of technology. The brand wants to bet on this new device as a tool with more reach which we know, and equipped it with nothing more or less than a new processor which had to be powerful to power the new screen: the new M4 chip.
In the detailed analysis we will give a good overview of the capabilities of this new chip, which, according to the demos we saw in the test area after the Apple Event in London, are spectacular. He even dares to launch programs rendering 3D which, in combination with the new Apple Pencil Pro, gives rise to a fantastic creation tool.
The new live design impresses. It’s so thin that It was even difficult for the camera to focus on the camera itself if you put it in profile. I liked the comparison they made in the keynote, comparing it with the iPod nano – which was still the thinnest device Apple ever made. This iPad Pro is now the custodian of this prize.
Despite its extreme finesse, and even in the largest dimensions, the device is compact, robust and above all: it does not give a feeling of weakness in the body – and yet it is not heavy at all. It can be held perfectly with one hand and doesn’t seem weak even if you pick it up in a corner.
The texture of the back is slightly different – at least in the minutes I was able to test it – and that makes sense since Apple wanted improve the dissipation of the new processor. To do this, they have slightly modified the rear materials, meaning that as much heat should no longer build up in one area of the case.
The new screen is the star
This new model is undoubtedly a firm bet that Apple must complement with an equally powerful software version with iPadOS 18, which we will see at the next WWDC24. If we talk about the first impressions of the current product, what is most striking about the new iPad Pro M4 is the new OLED screen improved by the brand. Apple named it Ultra Retina XDRand in my testing, it seems that the color and contrast quality improves drastically compared to its predecessor.
In the demos that I have seen, with photographs and some content creation appsthe colors are noticeably more vivid, deeper – the pure black of certain areas stands out in particular – even in an environment as complicated in terms of light as a keynote test area.
Another thing that I liked the most about this first contact is that it has neither more nor less the same nanotextured video anti-reflective layer which mounts no more and no less than the Studio Display XDR monitor. This process eliminates everyday reflections, while moving it away from what is traditionally called a “matte” screen.
The feel of this technology on an iPad Pro sitting on a table above a vertically placed monitor is different: on the iPad Pro, it’s impossible to eliminate all reflections, but it blurs them very well and allows you to prevent them from mixing with our content and confuse us on screen – even with very pronounced spotlights like the ones I mentioned previously in this test area.
With this update, Apple puts on the table – never better said – a device that no longer competes in power with Macs: even surpasses themalso thanks to the improvements in the artificial intelligence of the Neural Engine cores that we will test in the detailed analysis.
