Just yesterday we unexpectedly learned of the announcement of Nintendo Switch 2 and a Direct in June, the updated sales data for Switch and its games and the updated release schedule, but now we have more details about Will its production be scarce?
The president of the company, Shuntaro Furukawa, already shared the first details of the console and described it as a “model.” Now, in the question and answer session, he explains how they will avoid stock shortages of the successor model to avoid resale. You can read his words below:
Ask: In terms of hardware sales volume, the forecast for the current fiscal year of 13.5 million units seems to be a fairly high target considering the sales situation in the fourth quarter of the previous fiscal year. Are you considering measures to achieve this? Also, regarding hardware supply, it was mentioned above that when releasing new hardware, they would like to produce and ship a quantity that can meet customer demand from the perspective of resale measures. Taking into account recent changes in the semiconductor market, the successor model of Nintendo Switch will be produced in a certain quantity from the time of its launch to meet demand. I wonder if this is possible.
Furukawa: As in the previous fiscal year, we set the expected hardware sales volume at a slightly high level at the beginning of the fiscal year, so we recognize that it will not be easy to achieve based on the recent sales situation. In the first half, hardware sales increased thanks to the success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and the film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which ultimately surpassed the initial forecast of 15 million units sold. To sell the amount of Nintendo Switch hardware we expected this fiscal year, we’ll need to implement a good variety of measures.
During last year’s holiday sales season, in addition to selling hardware bundled with software, we also made proposals that would encourage customers to purchase a second unit. Through various initiatives, we hope to bring sales volume closer to 13.5 million units this fiscal year.
As for the supply of the Nintendo Switch successor model, we haven’t talked about the release schedule yet, so I can’t give you a concrete answer, but at this point there is no shortage of semiconductor parts, etc. as until the previous year. Finally, we do not expect the supply of such products to become a major issue when a successor model is launched.
