Although Xiaomi is best known in Europe for its smartphones, in reality it is a gigantic brand that covers all aspects of our daily lives; Xiaomi already has an electric car, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Xiaomi offers all types of devices, and they all have the same thing in common: they are smart and very advanced devices, but at prices that are more affordable than they seem. From the Xiaomi fan to the Xiaomi refrigerator, our home can be full of their products, all connected to each other thanks to the HyperOS platform. Even our kitchen can be completely Xiaomi.
Even the simple act of entering our house can be controlled by a Xiaomi product. The company has been offering smart locks for years, with mobile connectivity and advanced features such as fingerprint scanner; But even this does not meet current safety standards.
The lock that “looks” at your veins
Fingerprint readers are very popular in home security products, but they are not perfect; They can be fooled by various methods and may also fail during recognition. Therefore, it is generally recommended that this not be the only method used to authenticate unless it is a high quality sensor.
Xiaomi has found the solution with its new version Smart Door Lock 2 Finger Vein. As the name suggests, this is a version of their smart lock with a fingerprint reader; In fact, this sensor does not look at the shape of our fingerprints, but rather goes “further” and looks shaped like veins inside our finger
The system uses machine learning recognize vein images during the setup process; Once completed, it is able to identify us perfectly by simply placing your finger on the sensor, automatically unlocking the lock in just one second.
The great advantage of vein recognition lies in the precision it allows. Xiaomi claims that this system has an error rate of only 0.0001%; As a reminder, the fingerprint system has an error rate of 0.001%, an order of magnitude higher. Additionally, using machine learning means the system improves over time and use, so each day that passes will be more secure.
As if that were not enough, this is Xiaomi’s most complete smart lock, having nothing less than ten unlocking methodswhich we can optionally configure, including NFC, Bluetooth or a password using the integrated numeric keypad.
Speaking of security, this lock has a built-in alarm in case unauthorized access is attempted. Being a Xiaomi product, it takes advantage of its platform allowing connection from the mobile to check its status, and with HyperOS to connect with other devices in the home. Despite all this, Xiaomi claims that the battery can last up to a year.
The Xiaomi Smart Door Lock 2 Finger Vein version is available in China for 1,299 yuan (167 dollars at the current exchange rate), and although there is no launch date planned for Europe, it should soon appear in import stores.
