Hello folks and welcome back to another edition of Box Art Brawl!
Before we get into this week’s battle, let’s see what happened last time. We looked at Mario Paint for the SNES, with North America and Europe going up against Japan. Quite predictably, Western design won the vote with 89%, proving that color and whimsy will always win out over clinical, ‘modern’ design.
This week we’re sticking with the SNES to take a look at Capcom’s Demon’s Crest (or Demon’s Blazon in Japan). Released in 1994 (’95 in Europe), the game is well regarded for its side-scrolling gameplay and is one of the many titles currently available through the Nintendo Switch Online service.
It’s another matchup this week, regardless insignificant differences between western designs here; they are simply too similar to be evaluated separately. So let’s get on with it!
Be sure to cast your votes in the poll below; but first, let’s look at the box designs themselves.
North America / Europe
What better way to advertise Demon’s Crest than with a picture of a demon? It seems clear and makes sense considering this is the game’s protagonist, Firebrand. It’s quite striking and we like that pose; the evil character clutching his skull will never get old.
Japan
Using the portrait orientation of the Japanese SNES games, this image has a lot more to play with. Again you have Firebrand front and center, this time looking down into what could only really be described as the entrance to Hell itself; at least in our eyes. The use of color here is beautiful and the lightning just makes it even more impressive.
Thanks for voting! See you next time for another round of Box Art Brawl.
