The next big Star Wars game, namely Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, is revealing some additional information and details to add even more pressure.
The developers of Star Wars Outlaws recently revealed interesting details about the game’s reputation system, a key element that will significantly impact how players interact with the various factions and gangs in the universe. Something that will clearly please fans of the saga who want to live a “real Star Wars life”.
A reputation system for Star Wars Outlaws
During an interview with GameInformer, Alice Rendell, Senior Narrative Systems Designer, and Matthieu Delisle, Lead Systems Designer, explained how the reputation system will impact the player experience. Delisle emphasized that this system is designed to tell a story around dishonest characters and offer choices and consequences.
“We knew early on that we wanted to tell a story about ne’er-do-wells,” Delisle said. “And we knew the game had to be about choices and consequences, so it was only natural to use reputation as a way to interact with the player.
Han Solo with long hair?
The protagonist, Kay Vess, is a free-spirited ne’er-do-well who navigates the various factions of the Star Wars universe. Rendell clarified that every mechanic in the game is based on the reputation system. Kay doesn’t join out of friendship or loyalty, but rather uses the factions to his advantage, just as they exploit him.
Players can manipulate their reputation to maximize their winnings, for example by betraying certain characters or factions to receive more money. An example given by Rendell illustrates this dynamic: Kay could be tasked with obtaining an item from a faction and choose to steal it, or, if her reputation is good enough, simply go in and take it.
Each faction has its own territories and players must avoid staying too long in areas where their reputation is poor. This territory management adds an additional layer of strategy, forcing players to plan their movements based on their reputation.
As a reminder, this new game from Massive is scheduled for August 30, 2024, so you don’t have to wait long to see it for yourself.
