Fans of Mortal Kombat can look forward to another implementation: The previously confirmed new film has finally received a release date.
It has been known for some time that the Mortal Kombat film series will be continued after it was rebooted with a new film a few times ago. Warner Bros. subsequently confirmed that there would also be Mortal Kombat 2 on the film front, but the next film has not yet had a release date. This has changed now.
The sequel to the Mortal Kombat film reboot released in 2021 received the green light in 2022 before it became quiet for a long time. It is now certain: Mortal Kombat 2 will be released in cinemas on October 24, 2025, more than four years after the first part of the new film series. There will certainly still be some time until then and consequently you shouldn’t expect a trailer until further notice, but at least there is now clarity in this regard.
In the course of the announcement, it was confirmed that Mortal Kombat 2 would also be shown in IMAX cinemas, which means that the sequel is starting out a little more ambitiously than the first film, which was also shown on HBO Max at the same time as the cinema release was.
The sequel will once again be directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater (“Fantastic Four” from 2015 and “Death Note” from 2017). The cast will include several returning actors from the first film, including Chin Han and Hiroyuki Sanada, although there will also be some new names. Karl Urban will star as Johnny Cage and Uncharted actress Tati Gabrielle will portray Jade in Mortal Kombat 2.
Production on the film started last year, but was initially interrupted due to the major Hollywood strike. Filming was reportedly completed in January of this year, and extensive rework is now underway. Plot details have so far been kept under wraps.
