Super Mario 64‘s Cool, Cool Mountain is probably one of them The most famous snow depths in gaming history, but did you know that people have been trying to get through a single door for the past 28 years? That was until earlier this week when a YouTuber mentioned his name Pancakes2012 uploaded a Video explains how to get through without cheats or hacks – just with the help of a hopping penguin.
Now I know what you must be thinking: What door could possibly be so important that a community would spend nearly three decades trying to open it? Well, it’s the single the least most important door in the world. In fact, it’s the back of the door Mario After getting the star at the end of the sliding section of the level, exit the game. That’s right, we all actually have that been
Once you exit the door, you’ll be taken straight back to the main area of the level, next to the mother penguin, who insists that you find her child and return it to her. The problem is that the outside of the door does not have a knob and does not allow return passage. Although I remember trying to go back through the door as a child and failing, I didn’t realize that some people just didn’t do it went on
According to their video, the biggest obstacle to opening the door from the outside is the fact that the cubicle walls around the entrance collide and literally block the way there. If you’ve ever tried to open the door yourself, you know that Mario simply slides along an invisible wall in front of the door. However, by hacking the game and removing the walls, pannenkoek2012 discovered that he simply walked to the door would Open it, which led them to consider whether it would be possible to open it without hacks.
It turns out that you can actually open the door by manipulating the game’s logic. The door’s hitbox (and this applies to every door in the game) requires Mario to walk into the door to open it. Since the collision of the cabin walls prevented Mario from interacting with the hitbox, it is physically impossible to achieve this through normal means. But by manipulating the mother penguin’s AI (whose hitbox pushes Mario outward), it’s possible to wedge Mario into the door just enough for him to open it. Although players discovered that jumping over the mother penguin into the door would result in Mario free-falling through the level’s geometry, someone with the Discord username Alexpalix1 discovered that he turns around immediately after free-falling (which is Mario’s condition is set to walking), you would miraculously be able to collide with the door’s hitbox and open it from the outside.
Of course, pannenkoek2012 tried to use this newly discovered exploit Speed running and see if it is a faster strategy than the predetermined route. While they found that this didn’t actually save time, the discovery of the technology itself could pave the way for later optimizations.
Although the door leads to a room that is very familiar to all of us and holds no secrets, it is always beautiful to look at Communities come together to solve such puzzles. Super Mario 64 Players in particular have been trying to get this game wide open for a long time and are seeing this fruits of their labor is always pretty incredible. You might think that after all this time the game would run out of ways to continue to surprise us, but its die-hard fans have kept it alive and entertaining for 28 years and counting.
